I sure wish the reason this album exists wouldn't exist, but then it resulted in an amazing artistic response and a testament to his innocence. It's like David Bowie's last album or like the Show Must Go On in that regard. I wonder though what MJ's direction would have been without the allegations. TDCAU and Earth Song would still exist. I wonder if TDCAU would have made it onto a non HIStory album. It fits perfectly amongst the anger of its HIStory brothers but I can't imagine it on Bad or Invincible for example. I cant picture that or Earth Song on Dangerous either. Blood on the Dance Floor doesn't even fit. He was good at picking and choosing when a song was ready.

Does anybody feel a little conflicted about enjoying the HIStory album bearing in mind its roots are firmly planted in all the pain & misery that MJ was going through? I know TDCAU started life before then, but Scream, Stranger in Moscow, TTA, DS, Money etc. plus Tabloid Junkie, Childhood & Smile - make HIStory the most painful, autobiographical concept album he ever did. Even more so if you include the BOTDF tracks which many of us see as a Chapter 2 on HIStory. The album ranks amongst his best works to most of us I think and yet I guess all of us would happily have lost the opportunity to enjoy these tracks for what may have been if the events of '93 not happened. And Little Susie, Come Together, probably YANA and possibly the title track.

You know, over the weekend, I popped "HIStory" into my cd player while my boyfriend and I were in the car. He'd only heard a couple of the singles from the album. I love "Stranger In Moscow" so I quickly skipped to that. He totally understood why I liked it. It's got such a beautiful melody, and Mike's voice is so gorgeous on it. Then, just to surprise him, I skipped to "Little Susie". Oh my! He frowned up like I'd just blasted off a White Castle fart. "What the hell is this? Some Gregorian Chant monk shit? Suddenly Olivia Newton John doesn't seem so bad." I said "oh yeah, this bits the jelly. Smelly jelly, man". And he looked at me like I was crazy.
The education continues.

^ He compared Pie Jesu to Olivia Newton-John? No, he said ONJ was better!! He's one of those weird people that isn't that into music. I'm slowly brainwashing him, but it's baby steps. He kept moaning about how depressing Little Susie was. He probably went home and wet the bed that night.

I eat there one time and felt really ill after it. I had the sliders but I found the meat way too processed.

Listening to the full album today for the first time in ages.
Have to say, of all the solo albums this one really benefits of a full listen. Songs like D.S. & Childhood totally make sense and so does Come Together.
I think You Are Not Alone (which by the way, I think I've been more than unfair to in the past, was totally struck my it's gorgeousness today), plays the part of Heal The World in Dangerous. Meaning it's the palate cleanser before a gear change in the second half.
The second half is still autobiographical, but more reflective.
As put in the musings thread, definitely his strongest ever 3 song opening & you could argue that, although a tougher and more challenging listen than the perfect 80s albums, HIStory is his greatest album.

I'm sure next time I'm with her I'll change my mind. I used to think there were low points on HIStory but really, like Dangerous, although there are 'lesser' tracks, none of them are less than great when listened to as a full album. Having not heard D.S. for ages, I even really enjoyed that today. The second half is ridiculously good in terms of it being so Michael Jackson. Listening to Little Susie & History in full - no-one else but MJ would have the balls to do this kind of music.

Oh wow, Drew Struzan? That man is responsible for many iconic film posters! Thatโs really cool.

I like this one more than the one they ended up with.

Wow, imagine if Drew Struzan had of done the final design. Missed opportunity there.

One thing that always irked me about the HIStory album cover is how the statue actually looks nothing like MJ. The eyes are just off, they've given him a Scandinavian look.
