No, I'm not racist before anyone accuses me of it. I've had it said to me so many times when I've tried to have a serious talk about it and it gets me down. I'm not racist, I couldn't care whether Muslims are predominantly white, black or purple, it's about the belief system.
People always talk about the Christian church and problems within it - like the abuses by Priests and Nuns. People don't shy away from talking about the bible and how outdated it is and how bad Christian people are when they are against homosexuality etc, yet any criticism of Islam gets shut down.... It means you can't have a proper talk about a serious topic.
I think since there has been a growing number of Muslim people in Europe (either through birth or through migration here) we are seeing a rise of problems here that the religion has bought with it.
For example:
- Female genital mutilation (which is big in Muslim culture) - Forced child marriage (they call it child marriage, but let's face it, it's paedophilia) - Honour killings amongst families - Halal meat in our big food chain stores (many animal rights people don't agree with non-stun slaughter) - sharia law (which is big-time against women's rights) - Some women choose to wear the headscarves but many are also forced to by their husbands/male relatives - Islamic terrorism
I think this is a serious topic that gets neglected... These things go on, they are awful, outdated practises and beliefs, yet people still get upset about the Catholic church when by far the biggest threat is some of the beliefs of Muslims.
Any one care to share their views?

I think it's a more complex issue than most people realise, and a lot of people who don't know much about Islam are afraid to criticise it for fear of being seen as intolerant or racist. What people fail to realise is, Islam isn't even a race, it's a religion, so being opposed to their beliefs and ideologies cannot possibly be racist.
In terms of the impact Islam has on Western culture, we are always told to be accepting and tolerant of their culture and lifestyle, but many Muslims do not afford us the same courtesy. Infact, they abhor many Western values. I'm not sure why we should be tolerant of any religion that teaches that gay people are sinners and that woman who don't cover up are unclean.

Anyone who saw me in the atheist thread on MJJC can tell that I criticize Christianity just like I criticize Islam, but it's true when you criticize Islam the Islamophobia or even racist label will be quickly put on you. That's just to silence an honest discussion about Islam. The term Islamophobia doesn't even make any sense. Islam is an ideology. Why can't you criticize an ideology? Any time there are attempts at silencing criticism of an ideology it's a problem.
On the other hand, there are true racists who only use criticism against Islam as a way of inducing anti-Muslim sentiments. I am anti-Islam (as I am also anti-Christianity) but I'm not anti-Muslim. In fact, I support reformist Muslims like Maajid Nawaz in their quest to make the Muslim community more progressive. I also don't think most Muslims mean bad or are extremists, however we also need to address it honestly that even non-extremist Muslims hold some very problematic views because their religion keeps dragging them back to the Middle Ages.

I am a Catholic but only baptised. In general because I am gay and educated I reject all forms of religious dogma. Every religion has some practices we view as odious, but this is Islam bashing. People are born Muslim, they do not choose it - yes it has issues especially with sexism and homophobia along with khaft (Genital Mutilation), but these are not universal.
Some Islamic sects like Ahmadiyaa (Mostly Indian) do not proscribe this and there are even Islamic gay groups now. Since 9/11 the media has focussed on Terrorism, Extreme Islam like Sharia law (Not universal, most Muslims use more moderate Hanafi law), Sexism, Burqas (In fact many Muslim women choose to wear them) and schools with extremists. I am not saying it does not happen, but you can not brand all Muslims together just like you can not say all Christians are members of extremist evangelical hate and money churches. Every religion has flaws, Islam bashing is popular now in the lee of 9/11 and it heightens in September as the American media launches into the "Don't forget it brigade" and every time a Muslim has a gun or protests, or is a refugee, it is in the news.
I am new here, but I am disgusted that this type of hate speech is here. It is enough we have odious people like Trump in power and now we have all these racists and white supremacists coming out of the shadows and launching their true feelings about non whites on the world.
You may not be racist Ghost, but you are Islamophobic and what you say is bigotted.

You may not be racist Ghost, but you are Islamophobic and what you say is bigotted. There is nothing that Ghost said that is "hate speech" or "bigotted" and the term Islamophobia doesn't make any sense and it is only created to silence any critical discussion of a religion, ie. an ideology. That in itself is always wrong. There is no ideology above criticism. Christianity has its share of criticism, but supporters of Islam want you to accept that any criticism or critical discussion of Islam is "Islamophobia" and want to shame people into shying away from criticizing Islam under threats of being called a "racist", a "bigot", an "Islamophobe". As for your claims that Sharia is not universal within Islam. Wrong. Sharia is one of the main pillars of Islam. There is a 2013 world wide Pew research about how Muslims view sharia: www.pewforum.org/2013/04/30/the-worlds-muslims-religion-politics-society-beliefs-about-sharia/As you can see a big number of Muslims think Sharia should be the official law of the land. Many of them even think it should apply to all citizens, not just Muslims. A huge number of Muslims support Sharia laws such as stoning as the punishment for adultery or the death penalty for leaving Islam. Look at those percentages! That's far from being a fringe within Islam. That's a majority of Muslims - depending also in which country someone lives, but overall a huge number of Muslims subscribe to Sharia. I read the website of the Muslim community in my country. Here there is a very small number of Muslims, they are peaceful and they are what would you call moderate Muslims. However, when I once went to read their websites I realized that about Sharia even they write that in any Muslim majority country it should be the law of the land! Actually, Sharia is exactly the biggest problem I see with Islam. Because it isn't just a law for the religious. It is a law for the land and Muslims are ordered to make it the law of the land if they can. There is no such thing in Christianity. Christianity can easily be integrated into a secular society without any major theological dilemma. You will have a much more difficult time with Islam, exactly because of Sharia. So I guess we should just turn a blind eye on the huge number of women who do not? That is exactly what I don't understand liberal's love affair with Islam. Many liberals are defensive about Islam when it gets criticized and fail to acknowledge all the oppression that religion does to the most vulnerable people in any Muslim society: gays, women, atheists etc. In their zeal to defend Islam (because they mistakenly think that's what they have to do to not be a "racist" or "bigot") they actually abandon the people who would need their support and instead (with their silence and lack of criticism of Islam or with playing down its negative aspects) they support an opressive religious-political ideology that is as far away from liberalism as can be. IMO there is a lot of confusion about Islam in liberal heads these days. And the same people wouldn't think twice about criticizing Christianity, but somehow Islam criticism is made taboo in those circles.

My country does not have a problem with Islam as we are a tolerant and diverse society. look in the news and you will find Australia under control of a racist government (It's asylum system is heavily criticised) and they have several issues with Terrorism and a seething ghetto called Lakemba, that is no go.
New Zealand on the other hand is controlled by a liberal and non racist socialist government and our Muslims are scattered around the cities and the suburbs with a high Muslim population also have large numbers of Christians and atheists (We have many Polynesian migrants who are evangelical Christians and they are much more intolerant and backwards than any of our Muslim friends). Sharia and Burqas are not an issue here, that is a person's choice. NZ has a racist element (NZ First party is racist in some ways, but more Anti Asian (Asian is Chinese here)) and National Front, but both groups are despised by the public. Out of a population of nearly 5 million, less than 2% are Muslim. A sharia and radical preacher last year was deported by the Muslim community who were offended by him. NZ has had some racism ramp up over excessive migration from China and other parts of East Asia since the 1990s, but widespread Islamic immigration has not really taken off.
Yet Australia has been criticised as many brown NZer's have been deported and locked up for trivial offenses whilst white skinned NZer's are unable to get social welfare or attend University even if Australian citizens, yet are never deported. The other big difference is that Whites in New Zealand are descended from free colonists of the 1800s and most so called Whites have at least some Maori ancestry now, a White NZer who is 100% European is rarer now (About 35% of the population and shrinking) yet ones who are about 20% Maori are very common. Australians on the other hand are descended mostly from Convicts of the lower classes and have carried on their narrow minded attitudes through the past (Look at how they treat their indigenous population) and also much Southern European and Levant migration in the late 20th century (Many are religious with a "Traditional" masculine culture).
For interest Respect77 what race are you and ghost, because if its anything other than White, then you don't have a leg to stand on, given the shocking way Black people in America are treated (Police racism, profiling, red lining, crime and poverty).
Islam has never pestered me and never really bothered NZ much. I also wish you had paid attention to my remarks about how Donald Trump's popularity has lead to an increase of visible and open racism by whites against minorities. I don't wish to get embroiled in fights over race, sexism, gender, religious identity etc - But I would hardly think a Michael Jackson forum (A man who openly promoted toleration and diversity everywhere) is a place for bashing the religious dogma of Islam. It is more a I guess Stormfront or KK type issue.
I reacted here, as this thread is using all the code words suggesting White supremacy and that stinks on a MJ site.

Islam is not a race. Islam is a religion ie. an ideology. No religious dogma and no ideology is above criticsm and criticizing religions is not "racism". It is extremely problematic when ideologies are put above criticism. That's what helps those ideologies get away with anything - including the oppression of the vulnerable. You are actually now providing the perfect example of what OP was talking about when she raised the problem of any criticism of Islam being silenced with accusations of racism, bigotry and White supremacy. Do you think people like Ayaan Hirsi Ali are "racists"? Someone from Stormfront or the KKK? LOL. Or is Ali Rizvi a "racist" to you? LOL. Or Sarah Haider? Or Muhammad Syed?

I never said I like Islam - just that it deserves no more criticism than other so called religions like Christinaity, Hinduism, Judaism etc.
Actively not engaging in an argument - blugangsta is all about peace and understanding.
Inshallah - I pity though if we get a Muslim member here and they will instantly take to task what is being said here.
I bought up racists and bigots as they often resort to bashing Islam (Donald Trump etc).

However I will say, if people migrate to a country with different culture, traditions and a language, they should at least attempt to learn those mores, especially if they stay in that country permanently. Hence why I have no problem with Islamic Customs, but in the West they should not enforce their lifestyle on people in the host country. They can wear burqas, do arranged marriage and practice Sharia, but not force that on to people who are not Islamic.
I agree too, that the religion has a lot to answer for and giving all the scandals now with religion, I see religion dissolving in the next century to a global atheism and scientific integrity.
I also think that conditions in the home countries need to be improved, get rid of the corrupt leaders, overpaid armies, factions, poverty and corruption and bring in sensible secular management and the problems go away.

If individuals criticize and offend Muslims as people displaying anti Muslim bigotry, then they can be called racists. Criticizing Islam as the ideology it is has nothing to do with being a racist or bigot.
That idiotic word has only achieved to silence people who dare to call out how detrimental Islam can be, its bronze age ideas have no place in this century anymore, it needs to evolve and and embrace secularism as Christianity did. But the truth is that many Muslims aren't open to reform their religion.
I'm not against immigration, neither I was born in Europe but what I've noticed about some if not many Muslims moving to European countries is that they refuse to integrate, they want people to make concessions or exceptions because of their religion. There aren't even anti blasphemy laws in those countries but if natives dare to criticize Islam or Muhammad in any form Muslim extremists go out their way to hurt the "blasphemers" or kill them. I don't think all Muslims are like that but I can see how not accepting the customs and laws of the land trying to impose the Sharia can be a problem for Europe.

Thanks for your comments, Snow White and Respect 77. I appreciate the comments because it's nice to know not everyone is silly enough to believe someone who has issues with Islam is a "bigoted white nationalist." That's utterly ridiculous, Bluegangsta!
1. As has been pointed out, Islam is not a RACE it's a religion. And if we are allowed to criticise other beliefs, like Christianity and Scientology, then I'm sorry but Islam can be criticised too. Otherwise YOU are racist? Are only religions with predominantly white members allowed to be debated/examined/argued against??
2. There have been many polls taken (I can dig them up if you want) which show that Sharia IS a problem. There are a large percentage (I think 45% of Muslims in the UK in one poll) who want Sharia in the UK. If you know anything of Sharia then you will agree this is a problem!
3. Female genital mutilation, forced marriages, honour killings, these things are real. They happen. Which of these concerns make me a bigot?
Yes, I agree, NOT all Christians do bad things. Not all Muslims do. But some do. Why can't we talk about it. People like you are the reason why we can't tackle issues - people have genuine concerns but hide them because they're scared to be called racist when they aren't!

interesting thread. I too have concerns about Islam, and this is from me, someone who usually tries to defend the value of religion and spirituality. I saw this article online. It highlights just SOME of the issues within Islam and Sharia. This girl was raped by a relative at the age of 15, but SHE is the one being punished because she's the female and under Sharia you need FOUR male witnesses to defend her, otherwise it's her fault. 100 public whippings for her for being raped! www.weirdworldinfo.com/2018/09/14/muslim-man-rapes-his-15-year-old-daughter-and-she-is-sentenced-to-100-lashes/

I don't know how some women who are brought into Islam can say/believe it's a feminist religion that gives them rights. Islam may had given them "rights" for the 7th century, I guess because Muslim men have shown time and time again to think they own women and can treat them as a comodity or a slave who must serve and obey them. Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been talking about the problems Muslim men bring to European women since they see women as objets.

To say Islam is a feminist religion is nothing but smoke and mirrors and another deception by Islam. Although, no doubt some Muslim women were brainwashed into believing it. No Abrahamic religion is feminist. They all treat women as below men. Which is simply a product of the time they were born in. Only we shouldn't adopt bronze age and middle age values at this time and age.
Some may argue that Christianity made a little progress compared to the Old Testament, but that's just compared to the Old Testament and by today's standards it treats women below men. But the Old Testament and Islam (which is mainly based on the OT) are even worse.
In Islam a woman's testimony is worth half of that of a man. Explanation? "Women's nature made them more prone to error than men". How is that not sexist? How is that feminist? And that's just one issue. There are dozens of others like this.
Islam apologists throw out catch-phrases like "Islam is a feminist religion" for the gullible and uninformed.

So true. Thanks for that post Respect77 - it highlights one of the major problems within Islam. Where other religions and cultures are at least catching up to modern thinking about women/equality, Islam firmly plants its feet in concrete and refuses to move with the times. Islam still stick to their oldest teachings and that's why women are treated awfully.
Men who grow up in these Muslim cultures think of women like this because they're taught to from birth... women are taught to cover up. That's why there's Muslim men who probably view Western women like "tarts" - we refuse to cover our flesh or be ashamed of ourselves.
