Yes, the site is British. It was on Digital Spy Forum, which is mostly populated with gay/bi men like myself, so it's hardly surprising as MJ has never been that popular in LGBT circles.
I think it's a sad state of affairs that we can't have a serious song concerned with the welfare of the planet without people sniggering and making fun of it. Cuz singing about bitches and hoes is apparently so much cooler.
Isn't that the forum that always had a great deal of MJ haters? So it is hardly representative of anything. Just out of curiousity, how did they rate the other songs from 1995? YANA seemed to get mediocre ratings. Earth Song either got 0-3 or 8-10, basically people either loved it or hated it. Take That's Back For Good was the most popular number one from 1995, and granted, it is a good song, although hardly Earth Song levels of greatness, but I guess it's a very safe song choice.

As a British fan, I know the consensus that Russg is referring to, and it extends beyond a random forum. I too have seen sarcastic remarks and disparaging comments about this song in the British media over the years. It's funny, as Earth Song was a huge hit in this country, it is actually in a select few songs to sell over a million copies over here and is his biggest selling single in the UK. But at the same time, the song is also largely associated with THAT Brit Award performance and Jarvis Cockers juvenile stage invasion. The British press were very anti-MJ back in 1996, and Jarvis was hailed as a hero at the time by the tabloids, the pretentious music press and the cynical Britpop crowd. None of this stopped it from becoming a monster hit and Jarvis's little stunt didn't negatively impact MJ in any way other than more of the usual unfavourable bad press with British media, who already hated MJ anyway. On the other side of the coin, it did lasting damage to Pulp's career, as they were dropped from a major gig supporting Alanis Morrissette on her US tour, effectively ending any chances they had of cracking the American market. Iโm glad MJ pulled rank and they got dropped.

Bit weird to say many people hate Earth Song, when it was his biggest selling single (in UK at least).
Surely a bit of a dichotomy there?

Maybe it was polarizing like Michael. Many people loved it and a bunch of others hated it, among those the British media.

I don't think Earth Song is actually hated. I think it's just something perpetuated by a few music critics who feel Michael Jackson is beneath their -in their heads- superior music taste.
The fact it was the Christmas #1 says otherwise. A lot of these critics are revisionists who try to reinvent the past according to their own prejudices. Fuck these people!
The general public knows this song is great!

I really love the song, I've always had the feeling it was a HIStory favourite amongst MJ fans. It certainly is for me. General public, I mean it goes either way. I haven't seen an outpouring of hate for it in particular, certainly not enough to call it out. I actually watched that Jarvis Crocker video a few weeks ago and didn't really think much of it. Was actually kinda like "wait thats it?", but I guess back in the 1990s that was more ~~scandalous~~. I don't really consider people who dislike MJ or Earth Song as people who have the media doing the thinking for them. Sure some, but far from everyone. I think it's pretty clear it still has it's fans. It not only did very well at the time, but it's still doing well now in it's streaming numbers. On Spotify, it might be far from his most streamed song, but in the context of HIStory Disc 2 specifically, it's the 2nd most played track after TDCAU with 74 million plays on Spotify. YANA is right up it's alley though.
So yeah. I don't think there's a lot of hate for it in particular.

Yes the song is certainly hated in the uk where it was mjs biggest seller and spent somethoing like 6 weeks at number one including (at the time) the coverted xmas number one position.
I dare russ to start a positive thread instead of the, what seems like continuas attention seeking negativity that he seems to crave since at least 2018.i wouldnt mind if the claims had some legitimacy but its just like you are looking for anything however remotely negative.the whole world hates mj is that what you want to hear.

Umm... this thread was dug up from 3 years ago, I can't control new members bumping old threads. I admitted I was going through a hard time with my mental health for a while and it bled into my posts. I haven't started a thread like that in well over a year, so when you're ready to apologise, I'm all ears.

We need to look at this in as objective a way as possible, so that means chart re-entries.
2006 - 34th.
2009 - 33rd.
And those are by no means the worst chart re-entries for Earth Song in Europe either!
2006 - 71st (Switzerland) and 46th (Netherlands)
2009 - 44th (Sweden) and 32nd (Denmark).
By these measures, if its allegedly hated in the UK....it must be thoroughly despised in Switzerland!
What a load of nonsense.
Digital Spy is NOT remotely representative of the UK whatsoever and nor is various opinion pieces in media publications.
Earth Song is still a popular song in the United Kingdom.

Yeah, the Jarvis thing was well overblown and sensationalism. Then or now, it really didn't have any negative effect. In fact, Pulp also had a sales increase in the United States off the back of it whereas Michael had an increase in the UK.
