It's so funny, when I was listening to that album for the first time I felt kinda 'meh' about Heartbreaker and Unbreakable. Now I listen to them more than any classic.

I don't think its underrated, its slightly overrated by fans. Everything that could have went wrong WENT wrong! Sonically it's poorly mastered -just listen to Bad, Dangerous and HIStory! Those are how an MJ album SHOULD sound!- You Rock My World short film is a rehash of Smooth Criminal and Dangerous! Its too long, its disjointed -why would you put the opening 3 tracks together? They all sound the same to a casual fan and it weakens them by lining them side by side. Waaaaaayyyy tooooo many ballads and again all clung together. There's definitely a handful of greatness on it but its the moment he went from trendsetter to follower, and thats understandable. Nobody can have it all forever. And even so, I still sort of love it for all its flaws. I love you Vincy. I mean it. Come home. I’ve changed my vote to “yes it’s underrated”! I was fairly hard on this album and I think I’m finally beginning to enjoy it much more. I’m even after getting used to the track sequence and I can live with the fact that some of the tracks are in clusters; opening 3, the ballads.

The track sequencing reminds me of what they did with Dangerous. First half NJS tracks broken up by an anthemic ballad (Heal The World) before launching info the second half and finally coming full circle ending on another NJS cut. Invincible follows that same blueprint, first half uptempo Darkchild productions/neo-soul tracks, then Speechless is the anthemic ballad before changing things up for the second half and ending with Threatened. It actually works, providing you like long albums.

Even towards the end of Dangerous you’ve got WYBT, KTF and GTS and ending on Dangerous much like Invincible ending on Threatened. I’m not the biggest fan of long albums but MJ would be one of the exceptions.

^^ Good observations.
I remember Rodney Jerkins saying he was a big fan of Dangerous. I know he only produced half the album, but that might have something to do with the two albums similar sequencing.

I know he only produced half the album, but that might have something to do with the two albums similar sequencing. Yeah I’d say that’s definitely possible! Dangerous was probably MJ’s edgiest album to that point and RJ would definitely have been heavily influenced by Dangerous. And after HIStory it was time to get back to a funkier, dancier motif. Sure there’s ballads, but they’re surrounded by a wide range of very edgy tracks. I was listening very closely again late last night and there’s a ton of brand new styles for MJ here; you’ve got the stunning Neo Soul sound and on a few of them MJ doesn’t preform the backing vocals but ad-libs over them creating a brand new MJ sound. Break Of Dawn is a classic for me. You’ve got things like 2000 Watts which if you listen with a decent set of headphones there’s a ton of interesting things going on within it, as there is with Threatened again is brilliant. And Unbreakable, Heartbreaker and Invincible are all great to decent.

I guess it depends on who you ask. I know loads of MJ stans who worship at the altar of Invincible! We’re asking you! electriceyes , is Invincible underrated? Yes or no? Invincible was actually my first CD ever. My mama got it for Christmas 2001. I love that album so much that the disc got all scratched up and I ended up buying a new Invincible CD, but I still have my first Invincible because it was my very first CD. Off the wall and Thriller is mostly R&B. Then Michael went into a pop direction along with other genres. Michael went back to R&B with Invincible. Maybe people went wtf? because he's known as the king of pop...

Its my fave album ever by any artist. Does that answer your question? Well no, Is it underrated? Yes it is underrated. I think its one of the best R&B albums ever made. The likes of Timberlake, Usher, The Weeknd, Bieber could only dream of delivering a record of this calibre.
