Let's have it out once and for all. Is it underrated or does it deserve the criticism it gets?

I'm afraid I think it is underrated but deserving of the criticism. I always felt a disconnect from this album and for the most part, except a few tracks, didn't feel Michael's heart was in it.
I get the same vibe from Invincible as I do the TII tour - that Michael wasn't in it from the heart: it felt more contractual/financial etc rather than a desperate desire to fulfil these projects.

It's underrated to those who love it.
It's not to those who don't.
Simples.
The fact that fans are still discussing its merits 16 years later shows me that the quality just wasn't there for most people.

I don't think the general public knows the album except for You Rock My World. So, I'd say is underrated among them and not the fan base. I get why it's the most divisive album among us the hard core fans though.

I disagree with you on this part. Even though Michael needed the money on TII, Michael Prince commented on The MJCast Michael told him he missed performing for his fans, what he hated about touring was the doctors. At least on the March, April and probably early May rehearsals, it's seen how excited he was performing. I believe he put more of his heart and effort on the tour preparations than Invincible.

I think Invincible is an album that is both underrated by the public and slightly overrated by some fans (not you Matty lol)
I really mean the fans who don't listen much to the album and act like they love it just as much as any other work just to be a loyal fan

Sure it is. Had Unbreakable, Break Of Dawn, Speechless and Whatever Happens been released as singles then the album would be more highly regarded.

Yes, The MJJC forum is full of threads, saying how bad it is. The general public have either not heard of it, or laugh at it. Such a shame it is a great album!

I believe it is, by both fans and the public. I think the fans have a tendency to over-analyse it, which I think stems from the fact that it was MJs final album.

I think it is underrated in the fanbase and by the general public. Fans on the forums seem to have a lot of negativity towards the album, but on social media sites the fans are a lot more supportive of it. I think it's one of those albums that will be rediscovered by later generations and receive much more appreciation in the long run. As I said in another thread, the album is moons better than a lot of the music that was released during that era and I think people will look back and realize that.
Some like to complain that the album has too many songs, but knowing what we know now (MJ is dead and new material is scarce), I'm grateful for the abundance of songs on the album. The more the merrier. I don't think it is a bad album at all. There are a few filler songs, but I enjoy the album over all. There is some excellent material on there: Whatever Happens*, Speechless, Unbreakable, Privacy, The Lost Children, Threatened, Butterflies are some favorites. Michael's vocal performance on the album is also fantastic IMO.
I'm not saying it's a better album than OTW, but I must confess that I listen to it much more than I listen to OTW. *hides*

It's not underrated. It's argued heavily in the fanbase 16 years on for a very good reason.
Also, just because Joe Bloggs on the street doesn't know the album doesn't mean it's underrated. It means it's unknown, two different things.

The more the merrier. Can't agree with you there. I'd rather have 10 consistently excellent songs than 16 songs that are all over the place ratings-wise.
