How The Music Industry Is Honouring George Michael This Year
An album re-release, a new song and a documentary mark the singer's legacy this year.
It has now been a week since we heard the incredible reworking of George Michael's song 'Fantasy' featuring Nile Rodgers on the radio, but that's certainly not the last we'll hear of him as the year approaches the first anniversary of his tragic Christmas Day death.

Sony Music will drop George Michael's first posthumous album 'Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 / MTV Unplugged' - a re-release of his 1990 second album - this October. The original release won Best British Album at the 1991 BRIT Awards and became his second UK chart-topper, even out-selling his debut solo album 'Faith'.
We heard out first snippet of the forthcoming release with 'Fantasy' on Radio 2 on September 7th ; an old song of George's which was meant to go on the original album, but in the end just became a b-side to 'Freedom! '90' and 'Waiting For That Day'. He performed it on his 1991 Cover To Cover tour and his 25 Live Tour, but only last year contacted Nile Rodgers to arrange this sensational new re-working for the 'MTV Unplugged' record.
Many fans criticised the release, but Nile Rodgers insisted that is all part of the listening experience. 'You SHOULD have mixed feelings. No one's heart was dragged through emotional ambiguity more than mine. Tears, uncertainty, happiness and LOVE', he wrote on Twitter. 'This process was extremely emotional for me. We were such massive fans of each other's work. #Christmas2016 was very sad.'
Meanwhile, a new documentary about the late star's life entitled 'Freedom' is set to air on Channel 4. It has been narrated by the singer himself and features the likes of singers Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Liam Gallagher, Nile Rodgers, Mary J. Blige, Tony Bennett and Mark Ronson; models Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss; artist Tracey Emin; fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier; and comedians Ricky Gervais and James Corden. It's the second film about George Michael, following 2005's 'A Different Story'.
'Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 / MTV Unplugged' will be released on October 20th 2017.

Apple Music recommended the song 'Safe' to me last night. A bit of Googling shows it to be a very minor song in his catalogue, but I love that repeating... flute-ish? sound that kicks in around 1.08 and doesn't stop for the rest of the song.

Fantasy '17 (that's what I'm calling it) debuted on the UK charts at #85

New George Michael Doc on Showtime
Mon, Sep 18
Fans who miss the late George Michael will be able to hear him once again next month, when Showtime airs the documentary George Michael: Freedom.
Filmed before the singer's death last Christmas Day, the documentary is narrated by George himself. It covers his whole career, but specifically focuses on the time leading up to the creation of his album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, and his protracted legal battle with his record label which led him to step away from the spotlight.
The documentary also features George talking about the death of his partner and first love, Anselmo Feleppa, who died in 1993 from an AIDS-related brain hemorrhage.
Packed with unseen private footage, Freedom includes interviews with George's famous friends and fans, such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, Mary J. Blige, Ricky Gervais, James Corden, Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson and designer John Paul Gaultier.
In addition, the five supermodels who starred in George's iconic video for "Freedom '90" -- Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Tatjana Patitz -- will discuss their experience making the clip, which was directed by David Fincher.
George Michael: Freedom airs October 21 at 9 p.m. ET.

Okay, kids stop what you're doing & watch this.
It's George rehearsing for his seminal performance of 'Somebody To Love' at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert.
Notable not only for the stunning vocal, hair & facial hair, but for his contempories watching in marvel especially David Bowie from about 3:30 onwards.

Anyone catch the Freedom doc followed by Live in London on channel 4 last night? I recorded it. Will spring for the LWP boxset next week! Can't wait, and sort of glad I didn't buy Scream.

Loved the documentary.
What I love most is when they show fellow artists listening to music like us fans.
Sure it skipped over a lot but it was nice all the same.
I'll be looking for the LWP vinyl on Friday. Interested in disc 3 of the box set though...

What is this LWP project? A re-issue/anniversary release of the album? With demos, outtakes and live versions?

Nice too that the deluxe includes Heal The Pain with McCartney. The MTV Unplugged show is a masterpiece so it's nice to get an offical version of it finally. TonyR sent me a copy of it years ago that I listened to so much over the years. Thanks for that man. The documentary was great. Loved it. Also nice that the MTV 10 version of Freedom is on the DVD. We spoke about how great a performance that was about a year ago.

It is on Spotify now.
BTW, did they have a re-release of Faith already or is this the first big GM project after his death? If so I am surprised they didn't start with Faith as that's his his most popular album.

The LWP project was supposed to be a 25th Anniversary but was delayed so George could add the documentary and then postponed again for obvious reasons. So, strictly speaking it's not a posthumous project (although obviously it is!)
