it’s been known that most Anti-MJ rhetoric comes from mainstream media outlets, especially ones with weight, such as Variety and similar trade publications. That then trickles down to the general public, or more accurately, people who read trade publications, aka those in the industry and those who report on it. The divide between the opinion of the general public and the media has always been significant. All you have to do is attend an MJ related show like the musical for example, and witness how few non-MJ super fans are in attendance, just regular people of all ages who like his music. It’s the media that continues to push negativity and not to mention, it’s the media that is the least informed and the most self righteous.

^^^ that’s why when I see people/fans talk about awards and things of that nature I get a bit hesitant. The trades control the narrative of a lot of films and if they’ve been historically anti-MJ, no matter how good the film is, why would they all the sudden flip and sing its praises when awards season comes along? Idk… I don’t mean to be super cynical, and obviously it’s hard to talk about a film’s awards chances when we haven’t even seen a lick of it yet, but idk given the controversial nature of his legacy, I worry critics will do their best to muddy the waters and suppress its potential for critical acclaim. Obviously, I hope I’m wrong… but idk i’m naturally skeptical of this kind of stuff… skeptical, but open to being surprised.
On another note, how do you think the cast and everyone are going to talk about this film, specifically the controversy when they eventually do press? Do you think they’ll give the typical “he’s complicated” answer? or will they dig deeper? I have a feeling they will try to be as middle ground as possible to assuage the press. I would be surprised if anyone passionately defends him… possibly Jafaar because he’s family, but maybe he’ll be media trained not to, you never know.

The media has proven over and over that they will never give anything Michael Jackson related a fair shake. So I don't plan any paying any attention to anything they have to say about the film, whether it's on the lead up to it or after release.

Yeah, I vividly remember the now-defunct, snobby British music mag Q giving Invincibile a one or two star review. In the same issue they awarded Paris Hilton's debut 3 stars. What a joke.

MJ the Musical got "mixed" reviews but is a massive commercial success. I imagine it will be the same for the biopic.

MJ the Musical got "mixed" reviews but is a massive commercial success. I imagine it will be the same for the biopic. And we all know that (just like with all of MJ's albums after Thriller) 90 percent of the negative reviews aren't and won't be focused on the actual piece of art (the musical, the record, the movie...) at all... I remember HIStory album reviews going on about the allegations and throwing ad hominems at MJ, hardly talking about the music itself. It will probably be like that in the media now as well. But such reviews are meaningless to me. And if the movie will be really bad then I'm sure fans will be the first to drag it.

Yup, the bolded bit is why I said "mixed" in quotation marks. I'm really looking forward to this biopic, it feels like this could be a chance to tell MJ's story from his side of the story, which the media hasn't allowed in the past. Also it got approved in China, which is cutting down in showing Hollywood films. So that gives me a sign this will be a big hit.

Also....you can accomplish your "social experiment" of looking for Michael Jackson tattoos with a search tool called "Google"
