1. Jam - Lets face it, MJ always delivered the goods with his album openers and Jam is no exception. Brilliantly ominous, stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Funky horns and rhythm guitar and the best rap in a Michael Jackson song period. Love it. 9/10 2. Why You Wanna Trip On Me - Underrated by many fans imho, the beat is so uniquely MJ, the sparse arrangement and funky guitar licks have a slight Minneapolis-influence to them, but the song itself sounds like a natural progression of the MJ sound. Those harmonies in the chorus are the reason I love Michael Jackson. 8/10 3. In The Closet - First song on the album to score top marks from me. Beautiful piano intro works so well with that sensual spoken word intro from Princess Stephanie before breaking into the one of the coolest tracks on the record. The chorus is Michael Jackson at his best, the urgency and lust is palpable. For years, it was a toss-up between this and Who Is It for best track on Dangerous for me. 10/10 4. She Drives Me Wild - This has recently opened up to me, after years of sleeping on it. The drum loop is just great and MJ looked so cool on the HIStory tour when it was used as the intro to ITC. I love his vocals on the verses especially. 7/10 5. Remember The Time - Always gives me summery-vibes. Exquisite vocal delivery and production throughout and an obvious single. Some of his finest ad-libs on record at the end. I feel compelled to rate it higher than I'm going to, but for some reason, I'm sticking with... 8/10 6. Can't Let Her Get Away - TonyR says this is about 60 seconds too long, but if you're going to cut anything from this song, it sure as hell better not be the last minute - which is the best part of the song, with MJ spit-balling and beatboxing like a madman. That's the best bit of the song. I kinda see this as an "assault-on-the-ears" type production, much like Heartbreaker and Threatened, hard beats, tough rhythms, great to dance to. The bulk of the song is somewhat underwhelming though. 6/10 7. Heal The World - Poised, heartfelt and utterly sincere. Not a song I listen to a lot, but you can't fault a single thing about it. A beautiful composition that only MJ could've written. 8/10 8. Black or White - It's a fun song, if a little novelty in places. I feel like this song benefitted massively from being the lead single to the album and would not be held in such high-esteem without its accompanying shortfilm (which is one of his best) and its prominent high-profile single release. A fun live song though. 6/10 9. Who Is It - His greatest accomplishment as a songwriter? A top 3 contender, for sure. If someone asked me to give them an example of music being art, this is the song I would direct them to. 10/10 10. Give Into Me - MJ does grunge/rock? Sign me up. A nice change of pace from the more classic hard rock stylings on songs like Beat It and Dirty Diana. Honestly, this could've been a track on GNR's Use Your Illusions in a parallel universe. MJ and Slash were a match made in heaven on this track and Slash really brought his A-game, featuring his greatest guitar shredding outside of GNR on record. 9.5/10 11. Will You Be There - Not one I listen to a great deal - not because it's not brilliant - but because, much like Speechless or Man In The Mirror, I find it's best appreciated in a quiet setting, when I'm feeling the need to connect to something spiritual. I love how it builds and builds to a rousing climax and then strips back to something truly beautiful and vulnerable, with that prophetic spoken-word outro. Beautiful stuff. 9.5/10 12. Keep The Faith - The perfect song to follow WYBT. For people who say MJ sold out to a white audience post-OTW, take a listen to this. His greatest vocal delivery on the album and a career-highlight vocally, up there with the ending of Earth Song. Was totally worth the blood, sweat and tears that went into it. I also use songs like this as an example as to why MJ becoming primarily a studio singer from the 90s onwards wasn't necessarily without its upsides. Would he have managed to pull off such a vocal feat like this in the studio if he'd been straining his voice nightly performing MITM fully live on the Bad tour? Perhaps not. 8.5/10 13. Gone Too Soon - A much-needed, understated reprieve from all the drama of side two, perfectly placed in the albums tracklist. Beautifully written and sung. 8/10 14. Dangerous - The perfect book-ending to the album. Hats off to Teddy, as there's a huge improvement between MJs demo released on The Ultimate Collection and the final album version. Great chorus and middle eight. My only criticism would be that it does drag on a bit towards the end, but this doesn't bother me much, as I just imagine MJ jamming out and dancing to it and not wanting it to end. 9/10

I love this album! IMO, one of his most musically diverse offerings
Jam-the perfect intro to the album, as it combines hip hop, r&b and new jack swing perfectly, yet it’s very mj. The video enhances the song as well as the dangerous tour performance. Great lyrics as well (8/10)
Why you wanna trip on me-the intro reminds me of Prince, but instantly turns into an mj song. I love the harmonies and layered vocals on this, and mj sings the lyrics with conviction. It surprised me that he didn’t write this (9/10)
In the closet-great piano intro, similar to thats just the way it is. Great falsetto vocals and ad libs as well. The video enhances the song well and I loved the HIStory tour performance, very sexy (8/10)
She drives me wild-I appreciate the creativity that went into this track with the usage of car horns sampled well. Sort of a filler, but I really like the melody (7/10)
Remember the time-a beautiful and melodic piece with one of his most creative videos. I love his vocal energy, this piece gives me a bit of an off the wall vibe (10/10)
Can’t let her get away-mj appears to be freestyling on this track. It’s new jack swing brilliance and reminds me a little bit of James brown (8/10)
Heal the world-a beautiful poignant ballad with a great melody and a key change with choir vocals that give this song power (9/10)
Black or white-great song, guitar and music video. I still remember the night this premiered. (10/10)
Who is it-at one point this was my favourite mj song of all time and I was obsessed with it. The composition is perfect and mixes r&b and opera very well. I love the melody, chords, beat, operatic vocals and that bridge gives me chills (10/10)
Give in to me-a great rock power ballad. Mj sounds great and emotional on this, and also slash did amazing. Wish this was released officially in the US (10/10)
Will you be there-I instantly loved this when I first heard the music in a free Willy commercial. Perfect blend of soft rock and classical and it makes me emotional. Key changes are great too (10/10)
Keep the faith-I love the lyrics and vocals, the message inspired me to be strong when I was finishing high school and letting this song motivate me. Mj does gospel very well. I even performed this a few times years ago (10/10)
Gone too soon-a heartfelt ballad about loss. Always enjoyed the melody and lyrics (8/10)
Dangerous-love the choreography to this and the beat, but also feel it’s too long though a great album closer (8/10)

But 6/10 for BoW?? Isn't that the lowest you've given any track so far? I really think you've unappreciated it. Sure it's not a magnum opus song, but it's beauty is in its simplicity. What a riff.

But 6/10 for BoW?? Isn't that the lowest you've given any track so far? No, I rated Come Together and Invincible (the song) lower and I think Privacy and Don't Walk Away were both 6/10's. I don't really see a 6 as a bad rating tbh. I certainly don't dislike BorW, it's a nice little catchy pop ditty. And the shortfilm definitely gave it an edge. In some ways, it was a great way to convey the anti-prejudice statement, as it dressed up a serious subject matter in such an upbeat, fun way that it was palatable for everyone. He could've gone the more serious route ala Janet's Rhythm Nation, but it wouldn't have had the same universal appeal. Even with RN, classic pop moment though it is, as a song I'd argue it's not really that well known or liked outside of the US. Maybe 6/10 feels a bit stingey, but it's just never a song I feel compelled to play, unless I'm watching the video.

1. Jam - 8/10. In my experience it's a bit of a controversial track in the fandom - whether it's good or bad. Especially old school fans who loved the smooth sound of OTW, Thriller found it difficult to relate to this new sound. (I remember a fan who said she used to cry, not out of joy, when she first heard it. LOL.) I personally like it. Not one of MJ's best songs, to me it is not quite up with the openers with the previous three albums, but still a good song.
2. Why You Wanna Trip On Me - 7/10. It's one of the album's fillers, but I still like it. Not MJ written, but the lyrics are very much that he could definitely relate to. Like Matty said, the guitar reminds a bit of Prince.
3. In The Closet - 10/10. I love it! In fact, In recent times I have found a new appreciation for it and how unique it is. MJ at his most sexually explicit. (At least in a self-written song.) The video is also among my favorites. Not quite in the league of MJ's most epic videos, but still beautifully done, the dance is fantastic and the chemistry with Naomi is great.
4. She Drives Me Wild - 9/10. This is one of those songs that I like more than the fandom usually seems to. It wasn't until about 10-12 years ago that I re-discovered it and I love it ever since. I like the cheeky lyrics.
5. Remember The Time - 10/10. Probably MJ's most lasting hit from this album when it comes to the general public. I love it too, especially the ad-lib part. The video is one of MJ's best.
6. Can't Let Her Get Away - 4/10. This is one of the rare MJ songs that never really clicked with me. While SDMW did at a point, this is still more a skip to me and a song that I feel the album would have been better without.
7. Heal The World - 10/10. I don't care what anyone says, this is a gorgeous melody. MJ was allowed to go this sentimental and saccharine in my book, because he meant it and coming from him I believe it. A beautiful vocal delivery too.
8. Black or White - 6/10. Not one of my favorite MJ songs and I often feel it is a shame this is the album's best known song and the only one that was #1 in the USA and the radios tend to play the most, because this tends to suggest to the general public that this is the best this album has to offer, when IMO it's one of the weakest point of it. The lyrics are good and the video is great though.
9. Who Is It - 10/10. One of my favorite MJ songs. An all time Top 5. Something that's so uniquely MJ, that no one else could have done it. In my mind Heartbreak Hotel - Billie Jean - Who Is It are related to each other. The heartfelt vocal delivery is also something that only MJ could do this way, only he had this way of expressing the pain of loneliness.
10. Give Into Me - 10/10. MJ first went rock in Beat It but in my view he managed to top it with Dirty Diana and Give in to Me. This was proof that he could do rock just as well and authentically as he could do any other genre.
11. Will You Be There - 10/10. After rock MJ goes gospel. Again, an all time Top 5 MJ song to me. Probably my current #1. I love the album version the most - with the classical intro and the spoken outro. I think they all belong to the completeness of the song, I consider it a crime when any of those are cut out. MJ put his heart and soul to it and it is a very autobiographical and prophetic song.
"Everyone's taking control of me Seems that the world's got a role for me I'm so confused will you show it to me You'll be there for me And care enough to bear me"
Enough said.
12. Keep The Faith - 10/10. I think it's an underrated, often overlooked song, but it's so uplifting to me. I have heard stories (at Brad's seminar, for example, but other places as well) that it literally saved people from suicide. Alone for that it would desrve a 10, but it is also a fantastic vocal delivery.
13. Gone Too Soon - 9/10. Not a song I listen to much because it is so associated with death and mourning, but it is a beautiful song. I especially love the live version at Bill Clinton's inauguration.
14. Dangerous - 8/10. A good song to end the album with but not quite reaches the level of its top songs. I like the Fred Astair/Bandwagon references which makes it related to Smooth Criminal (as also at its stage performances).

1. Jam - 8/10. Kicks things off nicely. Like many on this album, I do think the song goes on too long. I also always miss a bit more bass in this song - I prefer the way they started playing it on the second leg of the Dangerous Tour with the more prominent bass. Another element I like about the live version during that leg is the music stopping for a moment after the rap. It varies it up a bit and keeps things more exciting. Imo the This Is It band really took the song to a higher level, making it a lot funkier.
2. Why You Wanna Trip On Me - 6.5/10. There was a period during which I quite liked this, but now I find it one of the weaker tracks on the album. I think the verses are still fun, with the pent-up aggressive delivery, but the chorus (despite the nice harmonies) becomes really boring after a while.
3. In The Closet - 8/10. Nice track. Interesting, intoxicating groove. Again, it's too long, but this song does have nice transitions in it. The video is great too - some fantastic moves he does not do elsewhere, and nice chemistry with Naomi.
4. She Drives Me Wild - 8.5/10. This one is underrated. Great groove, especially in the verses, and I like the originality of using the car sound effects to compose the song, which gives it is own distinct sound (without sounding out of place among the more 'standard' new jack swing tracks that surround it. Excellent vocals by MJ too, aggressive and funky in the verses, and lush in the choruses.
5. Remember The Time - 9/10. Excellent song, still sounds really fresh for a New Jack Swing track.
6. Can't Let Her Get Away - 8.5/10. Never understood the dislike for this one. I like the combination of it being build entirely around this funky groove, while having those nice lush chords played under it in the verses - an interesting combination, and I just really like those chords. And come on, that "Can't let go-whoa-whoa-whoa" harmony is great. For some reason this song is also one of the ones on this album that gives me the strongest nostalgic early 90s feelings, even though I do not have specific memories pertaining to it from that time. Never expected to see this being performed live by the Jacksons, but it worked really well as a band introduction song - funky!
7. Heal The World - 8.5/10. Lovely track. The opening melody (before the kid starts talking) always makes me sentimental. Nice melody, and beautiful and heartfelt vocals by MJ. Not as powerful as a Man In The Mirror, but a sweet anthem nevertheless.
8. Black or White - 9/10. Great, catchy track. The riff is an earworm, I like the synth strings that come in and out throughout the song, and the percussion adds a nice groove to what would otherwise be a straightforward pop track, which makes it feel fresh. The bridge and rap section are both really unexpected and fresh departures, that they somehow do manage to make work together. The ad-libs and harmonies in the final minute are pure MJ bliss. And the video is among his 3 best ones. And finally, a track that does not somewhat overstay its welcome!
9. Who Is It - 9/10. Fantastic, unique song. Completely original sparse groove, followed by a pre-chorus and chorus with dark, melodic strings (not unlike Smooth Criminal in that sense). Really original composition.
10. Give Into Me - 5/10. Never liked this song. I do not like this overly produced, slick rock sound to begin with, and MJ sounds forced on this to me. I'd take it off the album.
11. Will You Be There - 9/10. This, on the other hand, is fantastic again. Again, a unique groove, combined with a lovely melody and heartfelt vocals. The background, gospel-style vocals in the chorus alone are beautiful.
12. Keep The Faith - 8.5/10. Speaking of great vocals, this song features his best on the album. The way this song builds and how MJ unleashes in the later sections of this song is excellent. Yeah, not as great as Man in the Mirror to which it is always compared, but beautiful nevertheless, and (towards the end) heavier on the gospel.
13. Gone Too Soon - 8/10. Beautiful song, beautiful delivery.
14. Dangerous - 8.5/10. The industrial intro to this also always triggers a nostalgic feeling, for some reason. It's what makes me think 'Dangerous era' most strongly. Another strong New Jack Swing track (thank god he went for Teddy's version here, instead of the Streetwalker-like early version). The ad-libs are nice, but this is another one that does go one way too long. I like how this was played during some of the HIStory tour shows, making it a bit groovier.
All in all, just a fantastic album. The only downside is its duration to me. Take off Why You Wanna Trip On Me and Give Into Me, and cut down most of the songs by 2 or so minutes, and it would be even better imo.

Gonna keep this to the music and not so much my interpretation. I will say that I probably connect with this album personally more than any other, despite it not being my favourite.
1. Jam - Such a massive departure from the previous album. Breaking glass, statement. I enjoy the rap too. Great lyrics with deep spiritual connotations. Incredible concert opener too. Great guitars. Would love to have seen this in 2009. 9/10
2. Why You Wanna Trip On Me - The sequel to Leave Me Alone in my head. Speed Demon-esque verses, that single refrain from the chorus. In my head I think this would sound better with Bad era instrumentation, but I've always loved this song. 8/10
3. In The Closet - Such a brilliant sexy pop song, and can't help but think that the title held it back. People would definitely attribute it to homesexuality. But anyway, more sexy verse vocals and that falsetto chorus is just catchy as Hell. Naomi then. 10/10
4. She Drives Me Wild - Always loved this. More industrial sounds that were in Jam found here. Lots of noises and mechanics. Chorus was always catchy as hell to me. 8/10
5. Remember The Time - Another perfect pop song here. Smooth like chocolate verses, catchy chorus, amazing ad libs. Could have been a 3 minute song but never ever outstays its welcome. 10/10
6. Can't Let Her Get Away - Mental that I've seen this song performed twice by Jackson blood. James Brown funky vocals but this is the weak link for Dangerous for sure. This would be a lower low than Just Good Friends for me. Still great but just never wowed me. 7/10
7. Heal The World - Gorgeous, simple, effective. Beautiful pop song with a big sound and message, I'm giving this 10/10
8. Black Or White - Jesus, what a song to kick off the era with. Catchiest guitar lick ever, great message, fun rap. That panther sequence sums up the whole album for me. 10/10.
9. Who Is It - After the message songs, we get the introspective ones. A monster of a tune. It's like Billie Jean written in a bad space. That bass, -great production, amazing chorus. Those strings. Amazing. 10/10
10. Give In To Me - What a roll. Another ridiculously simple yet catchy guitar lick, catchy vocals and a chorus that melts your face. Slash sounds phenomenal, and the production just is sublime. I think Botrell preferred the raw version, but I'm glad he wasn't listened to. 10/10
11. Will You Be There - As I got older, this song made more and more sense to me. It was a conversation between MJ and the fans, God, whoever you think. But the second you think about the lyrics from your perspective I don't think MJ ever wrote another song that captures that feeling of needing someone or something, just to know you aren't alone. The song is a masterpiece from start to finish. That intro/outro. It's every emotion. And as the song builds you can't help but get caught up in it. 10/10
12. Keep The Faith - I always thought this song was a little safe, but Iit has grown on me more and more over the years and continues to do so. I always let the fact that it was written by the people that wrote MITM get in the way, leaving it feel like a "well this worked, let's do it again" but on its own its a gorgeous song. 8/10
13. Gone Too Soon - what a risk putting this here, but it really does close out the introspective part perfectly. After dealing with agony, paranoia, spiritual longing and acceptance, animal desire and passion it's like Gone Too Soon is sequenced to remind us of death and finality. A gorgeous song, with a performance that rivals She's Out Of My Life. 9/10
14. Dangerous - And we come full circle. The industrial noises are back. The loudness of the world around us. "She" is being a bitch again. "She" is just life, to me. What a risk "rapping" the verses. Such a great bridge and chorus. That beat is vicious. This was always a favourite of mine, and always will be. Glad I got to see the amazing '95 version of the performance live in person. 10/10
I do think that Blood on the Dance Floor and Someone Put Your Hand Out are much stronger songs (and were originally on one iteration of the album) but I'm glad the way things panned out with BOTDF getting to shine in 1997 and nab his last #1.
Someone Put Your Hand Out will hopefully get it's dues one day.

Just listening to George Michael's Faith today.
Thinking that the title track probably gets the same reaction amongst GM fans as BoW does here.
Compared to his more adult, more complex works, Faith is seemingly throwaway pop.
But like BoW, it's beauty is in its simplicity and a killer riff.
Both pop classics.
