Apparently there's a "We Are The World" documentary on its way, due to premiere on 19th of January and then available on Netflix ten days later.
Rolling Stone article:
‘The Greatest Night in Pop’ Doc to Chronicle the Creative Journey Behind ‘We Are the World’Film will premiere at Sundance this month before arriving on Netflix Jan. 29 A new documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop, will dig into the history of the 1985 charity smash, “We Are the World.” The film will have its premiere at Sundance on Jan. 19 and then hit Netflix not long after on Jan. 29. Directed by Bao Nguyen, The Greatest Night in Pop will feature a plethora of previously-unseen footage as it traces the “We Are the World” story from the planning stages through the all-star recording session. The movie will offer a glimpse at Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson’s writing sessions and all the work that went into getting 46 of the globe’s biggest music stars in the same studio on the same day to record the hit track. (Producer Quincy Jones famously placed a sign on the door to the studio: “Check your egos at the door.”) The Greatest Night in Pop will feature interviews with several of the artists who appeared on the song, including Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Smokey Robinson, Cyndi Lauper, Dionne Warwick, Huey Lewis, and Kenny Loggins. Other personnel, including the session musicians, engineers, and production crew, will also share their recollections. “We Are the World” was originally the brainchild of Harry Belafonte, who came up with the idea following the success of the Band Aid charity Christmas single, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The song was recorded on Jan. 28, 1985, at Hollywood’s A&M Studios (now known as Henson Studios), with many of the artists heading right to the session after attending that night’s American Music Awards. Upon its release in March 1985, “We Are the World” became one of the biggest songs ever made, selling over 20 million copies worldwide and becoming the first single to earn multi-platinum certification from the RIAA. It’s estimated the song helped raise over $63 million (in 1985 dollars) for humanitarian aid in Africa. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/we-are-the-world-documentary-greatest-night-in-pop-netflix-1234941101/

I only watched the original documentary about 12 months ago! That original doc is actually my first MJ memory that I’d forgotten for decades. I must have seen it in 86, about a year before hearing bad in the nightclub but probably didn’t realise that they were the same person as I was 7 years old. I remember being completely taken by MJ watching it. I’m looking forward to this. Thanks for sharing MichaelD.

I wonder what this docu will add to the 25th anniversary one. Same, that's such an excellent set with all the included bonus footage. This could be interesting, let's see. Hopefully MJ's contributions will not be downplayed.

I actually liked the original docu on this, especially the recording footage as it displays Michael's determination so well. Let's just hope it doesn't become another 'diminish Michael Jackson's contributions'-piece-of-work. He was so casual yet completely in control. Well deserved confidence at its peak, and it showed.

I was like that when I first saw the bad video, they were saying it was mj and I didn’t believe it since I was familiar with thriller already Anyways I’m glad this is coming out, I can’t wait to see it!

Thanks, the first impression is pretty good! Nice that they got Lionel and Bruce to sit down for this, and good to see that the trailer features quite a bit of MJ (and that we already see Lionel crediting him for a lot of the songwriting).

I wonder if the late great John Barnes will finally get the recognition he deserves?

It is such a beautiful thing to realise that Michael has and always will transcend the narrative the media have created for decades. In the form of feelings the truth leaks through the cracks in the walls they continuously try to build in order to enclose him. Their existential crisis is that no matter what they do, no matter what angle, narrative, agenda, they can’t topple greatness and the ultimate truth. Michael’s legacy will continue to thrive, to live and breathe with or without the media and dark forces who have been relentless in their quest to destroy. They can be as relentless as they like, but Michael is boundless.
