Yeah fair enough. I’ll dispense with my nonsensical piss taking then. The older JT gets the more twee and unlikable he becomes. If MJ is Unbreakable JT is Unlikable. I find that twisty dance thing he does quite cringe. Oh I was totally taking tbis piss in my last post. Rip me a new one all ya like. I’ve been listening to Selfish tonight and digging it. It’s a grower.

Justin Timberlake is receiving the poorest reviews of his career for his sixth studio album:
"Just as that Teflon coating is beginning to erode under the glare of cultural scrutiny, Timberlake's music has begun to lack zest. What goes around has indeed come back around."
★★½ —The New York Times
"Timberlake recently told Apple Music that Everything I Thought It Was is his 'best work' yet. It's not. This was actually disproven during the very first song."
★★½ —Rolling Stone
"JT hasn't brought sexy back. I don't think he took it anywhere near the studio either. Perhaps he left it under one of those hotel mattresses he claims to have broken."
★★ —The Independent
"Everything I Thought I Was is certainly not the career defining masterwork Timberlake seems to think it is, but nevertheless it's just enough to get him over that mid-life bump."
★★★ —The Telegraph

This is really only a first listen recap of my initial thoughts, but I liked it. In all, it’s a decent effort that nods towards Prince, Kanye, Janet and Chris Brown in terms of its overall style and sound. Make of those names what you will, but the influence in sound and style is there nonetheless. This album is an amalgamation of sounds and styles. However, if you don’t like JT you’ll find nothing to like here. I’ll possibly add and/or detract from this after a few more listens.
Everything I Thought It Was
Memphis The track opens the same way Prince’s Eye No from Lovesexy does; with a synth sound that can only be described as spiritual tapestry. Wether it’s sampled directly from Eye No or -influenced- It goes about setting the tone for the entire album; an adult themed contemporary r&b pop album that’s peppered with Prince’s Sexual Spirituality style throughout. “Just be great. Who cares if there’s too much on your plate.” The track is a mixture of mission statement and MOR r&b. Sets the scene quite nicely.
Fuckin’ Up The Disco R&B Guitar laden with a dark synth that plays as an undertone for the lyrics. It gives the the track a real vibe actually. Flashes of Kanye’s Fade abound throughout.
No Angels Love the swelling fat bass synth. The vocal harmonies have that vocoder effect Daft Punk used quite a bit on later tracks and guest spots. Anyway, we also have a disco strummed guitar played in the same style as Chic’s Nile Rodger’s.
Play “Time for a fuckin vacation. I just want to plaaaay….” This is a modern day Sledge Hammer. It’s as though the groove and bass line are taken directly from it and the entire track is built on it. I listened to the album on my Beats and this chord for chord sounds exactly like Sledge Hammer.
Technicolour Slow r&b jam built around some great vocal harmonies. The rhythm picks up around the half way mark and the track grooves nicely. Reminiscent of the overall vibe of The 20/20 Experience. It really comes into its own towards the last 2 minutes.
Drown I heard this one prior to the album release and thought it was rather plain, but it really works well here and has grown on me. The vocal delivery when he sings “You’ve been begging me to stay” elevates it.
Liar (feat. Fireboy DML) The line “You’re my only desire”, I wish I could put my finger on where I heard it before. It reminds me of something else.
Infinity Sex Sounds a lot like that Flat Eric track from the 90’s. It’s that fat synth bass again! There’s a bit of what sound like late 90’s dance music samples, blended with modern r&b and all built around the vocals.
Love & War We have the obligatory Prince moment -or, in this case, second Prince moment- Well, not quite, we have the Lyn drum machine complimented by that synth again that was used in No Angles. Maybe the first anthem of the album. JT proclaimers “You’re the only one that I’ll fight for” despite “Still making love while we make war!”
Sanctified (feat. Tobe Nwigwe) This was performed live recently on one of the chat shows when JT was doing the rounds. It’s the album’s rock track. Well, the gospel rock track. It’s got a nice counter balance between a really heavy rock guitar and church piano. Although this album is less influenced by MJ’s Off The Wall -hear Justified- MJ and OTW do get a lyrical mention; “I go off the wall, no MJ, but I'm walking on moons It's amazing, baby”
My Favourite Drug The only way I can describe this is r&b disco dance pop. Actually, ‘a party track’ is more apt. Handclaps enhance a playful bass riff/run and JT does his “Hey fella’s…..Hey ladies….” Senorita thing. Also flashes of Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP.
Flame The albums second anthemic declaration of love and hope. “I went to the ends of the earth, it still didn’t work…” and an interesting play on words that you just know he’ll milk live, “Remember, ‘member, ‘member when you said you’ed love me til’ I die, love me til’ I die…” Musically it draws from JT’s duet with Rihanna, Rehab. Weirdly, in the track Rehab Rihanna says “my favourite drug”, which is the title of the track that precedes Flame on this here album. Just a useless bit of coincidental trivia, something my wife pointed out.
Imagination One of the albums more straightforward pop tracks. Sparkly, playful, short and sweet.
What Lovers Do More contemporary adult r&b that is sprinkled throughout the album. Janet comes to mind throughout a lot of these tracks.
Selfish The lead single and quite possibly one of his best songs in terms of melody, sing along ability and rousing chorus. It’s catchy, anthemic and uplifting.
Alone Opens with a cello. Well actually, there’s a cello throughout, and piano. “We should just leave it Alone, maybe we’re best on our own.” The albums sad song. The one who got away. A song of regret. It ends quite abruptly but flows nicely in to the next track….
Paradise (feat.*NSYNC) This may be the only track to feature acoustic guitar! It’s another anthem of love and hope. Very Chris Brown in style. Sounds a lot like Crawl from his Graffiti album.
Conditions Old school r&b. Again, a 90’s vibe, but whimsical in its delivery a rather great album closer. JT reasons with the listener via his lady; “I'm less Superman, more Clark Kent You want a hero, I don't know where he went I'm just a man, I'm gonna mess up again Just a sinner out here tryin' to repent”

Yeah, it's not as good as Judas Priest's new album, but then what is? I don't know if he really deserves the time I always seem to give him, but I guess his Prince/MJ impersonations interest me more than Usher's, Chris Brown's or The Weeknd's (although I'd say the song Starboy is arguably better than JT's entire back catalogue). Don't mind the sound of it. Definitely some massive Prince influence on the opening track Memphis, which is a cool one. I liked the closing track, but the lyrics are a little irksome, kinda like "yeah, I cheated on ya, I can't promise I won't do it again, but we cool, right?". "Open Letter to a Doormat" would be a more appropriate song title for that one. Technicolor has a lovely chorus. Drown is a grower and I still really like Selfish. Alone is a stand-out, nice to hear something a bit more simplistic from him, not so produced. The one song on the album that most resembles artistic growth from Justin. I want to hate him more than I do. But the more everyone else seems to hate him, the more I find myself warming to him. Always the way. I probably would've hated MJ in the 80s. Something in my psychology always roots for the underdog.

Nobody is going to tell us what to like or to not like, or what our opinion is of something. We’ll make that decision for ourselves thank you very much! Is he worth the time you give him? If you enjoyed the overall experience, yes. If you didn’t, how many films do we sit through that we think meh. And your the only one here -besides myself- who has a valid opinion one way or another. You’re a motherfuckin star boy.
