Should ban some of Prince's music too if we're going down that path. I mean, he literally sings about the revolting (and illegal) act of incest in his song Sister. Yes but Prince was not 16 at the time and Sister was never a hit single like Gucci Gang is. Also Sister was meant as a joke, Gucci Gang is serious, this 16 year old boy is festooned in tattoos of skulls, is always high and drunk and wears a broom on his head. None of that really matters as both songs still cover controversial (and illegal) subject matters, which is the main thing. I doubt you'd be calling for Prince's song to be banned if it was reaching Gucci Gang's success, and nor does it matter how old Prince is because incest is illegal in most countries - including just about every state in the United States. Additionally, Sister wasn't meant as a joke, Prince said so himself. From an interview in the September 1983 issue of Musician Magazine... PRINCE: “Sister“ is serious. “Head” could be taken as satire. No one’s laughing when I’m saying it so I don’t know. If people get enjoyment out of it and laugh, that’s fine. All the stuff on the record is true experiences and things that have occurred around me and the way I feel about things. I wasn’t laughing when I did it, so I don’t suppose it was intended that way.Frankly I find the lyrics of Sister disgusting (more so than Gucci Gang, which while a poorly written song isn't as explicit as Sister) but I'm not necessarily going to call for it to be banned. I also find it pretty funny for a Prince fan to go around criticising the looks of other artists when Prince has had some pretty ugly looks himself throughout his music career. Hell I'm saying all of this as someone who's a casual fan of Prince and doesn't care at all for Lil Pump or his music. The fact you want censorship on these songs with controversial subject matters is hilarious given your most favourite artist ever has also covered a number of controversial subjects himself. |

I just read the lyrics and it reads like the person didn't want this relationship.
It's still very controversial.

Earlier today while researching the song, I came across a Prince.org post ( here, top one) that summarised how the song sounded to me. It starts off positive with a young Prince getting carried away by lust and excitement, but then proceeds to transition to a more negative and victimised viewpoint. Like you said though, still pretty controversial. It appears there's still lots of Prince fans debating over the song. |
