Janet Jackson to Receive Icon Award at 2018 Billboard Music Awards
Janet Jackson has been one of music's leading voices since the '80s, and now the pop legend will be honored with an appropriately prestigious award at this year's Billboard Music Awards. Dick Clark Productions and NBC announced Monday (May 7) that Jackson will be receiving the coveted Icon Award, which recognizes singers' contributions.
Along with receiving the honor, Jackson is also scheduled to deliver a highly-anticipated performance, which will be her first on television in nine years. She joins the club of Icon recipients along with Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion and Cher.

I hear she's going to perform. Are the Billboard music awards televised? Yes, they are. This will be her first televised TV performance in 9 years (the last being her performance of Scream as a tribute to MJ in 2009). It's been trending on Twitter all day.

I'm just surprised she has not received it by now. Go on with your bad self miss damita jo The award was established in 2011, not so long ago. The weird thing is Janet getting the Billboard Icon Award first over Michael. I'm not being salty or shady but he's been charting on Billboard for 5 decades, as long as Cher has been as well.

Well, when you really think about it, these awards are a bit meaningless anyway. They have a lot to do with ratings. Would you want an alive Janet Jackson who has not performed on tv in years on your show, or award MJ and have Jermaine collect it on his behalf? Not downplaying Janet's accomplishment at all by the way. She has earned her place in music history. And the award is well-deserved.

Again, not to downplay Janet, but lots more worth winners
Cher/Celine Dion/Neil Diamond/Prince/Stevie Wonder and ....Jennifer Lopez???!!!
I mean, come on, I guess they all had albums out that year...
Stevie & Prince - 100%
Neil, Cher & Celine are all legends also.
But J-Lo? I mean I like her, but ahead of Madonna, or even Carey. I know she doesn't play by the rules, but quite why Madonna never gets these Icon/Legend awards is beyond me. What more does she have to do apart from stick around for 35 years, be the most successful female artist ever, have the most Top 10 hits ever, have a glorious back catalogue, biggest grossing female performer ever....

I think it's more a case of who they can get to turn up at the event, more than anything else. Madonna never struck me as someone who revels in past accomplishments, she's a lot like Prince in that regard, more interested in pushing forward and moving onto the next project. She probably gets offered these accolades all the time, but just turns them down. Janet and Michael have always been whores for something shiny to display on the mantelpiece.

Why do you call Michael a whore? He deserves every accolade he gets, he's the most awarded male artist for a reason.

I just think it's funny how much he loved getting them. He certainly didn't need a shiny trophy to validate his greatness, but it made him happy, so whatever I guess.

I just think it's funny how much he loved getting them. He certainly didn't need a shiny trophy to validate his greatness, but it made him happy, so whatever I guess. Probably he loved getting them because Michael was told he'd be a nostalgia act when the Jackson 5 weren't that popular anyone, he was told he wouldn't surpass his success he achieved as a child when Off The Wall came out, before releasing Thriller he was mocked for believing it'd be the greatest album ever, after the allegations hit, many thought his career was over, even more so being charged a second second time and facing a trial but Michael received the most thunderous standing ovation he ever had on his career at the World Music Awards just a year later or being acquitted. I can see what bedroom is saying but I still think Michael deserved more the award than Janet, her success is more local (USA) than worldwide. When the news appeared here in Mexico, news papers outlets and on TV began with the sentences, either "Michael Jackson's or the King of Pop's sister will receive the Billboard Icon Award.' She may have been able to step out Michael's shadow in their home country but not in the rest of the world.

That's what I always thought as well. She even joked "is this where musical dinosaurs go?" when she was inducted into the RRHOF
