Oh you've sold me now. I'll give it a whirl. I was put off when I found out it had Peter Beale from Eastenders playing Roger Taylor, but you've talked me round. If I hate it, I will be invoicing you the cost of my cinema ticket. Deal? Absolutely, and I will forward to Mr Taylor and Mr May. To be fair Beale's son is actually decent in it.Β I probably won't see this so please PM me the part that made you angry. Intrigued

I want to see it too, but are not keen on movie theatres here, full of chatting teenagers on cellphones and they pack everyone together. Plus its about $20 to see a movie now.

It would have to be something that I really really love, and Queen is one example. Chucky is another. I would go there to see Chucky, if it ever comes to the cinema again
I'm gonna pay those $20, just this once. It's something I've never done. Of course I've been to the cinema before, but last time I went which was like 2006 or something (yeah, that's how rarely go to the cinema), it wasn't this expensive

Just don't go to an evening session on Friday and you're pretty allgood with the chatty teenagers here (and even then). Reading Cinemas are quite reasonable, like $11 for standard, and I think they let you pick where to sit so you can sit away from people

So I saw it earlier today and I liked it! It wasn't great, but it was good. I get that some dates had to be moved around for the sake of the film (like I get why they had Freddie be diagnosed 2 years before he actually was), but some other ones - like having Freddie go 'How about that Bowie aye?' - at Live Aid when they fucking recorded together 3-4 years earlier didn't make much sense! There were also a scene or two that definitely feel a little too dramatised up. The cast were BANG ON. Seriously, it was crazy seeing them all nail not just the look, but the minor characteristics and quirks each of the musicians has. I went with my father and he said he knew that Freddie was played by an actor, but were there any scenes that were archive footage? I said that outside of a few shots on TV screens (i.e. @ Live Aid when you see Princess Diana walk in), it was all entirely new. This is further emphasized when they show real life photos of the people during the credits, and you're blown away by how close the actors look to their real life counterparts. I felt the first half of the film was too fast moving, and glimpsed over some stuff so you couldn't fully appreciate the band's rise, but if you're condensing ~15 years into 2 hours it makes sense. It slows down in the later half of the film, thankfully. I found it weird that they showed the making of We Will Rock You, yet didn't show it at Live Aid. I was fully expecting them too, especially given they made an emphasis on it being a crowd song. Yeah, I'm flirting with the idea of seeing it. Let me know your thoughts Nigel. There's lots of fiction, and does Freddie a disservice in many ways. I get that its a film, and have no issues with embellishments of the truth for dramatic effect, but I feel there was blatant distortion from Brian/Roger here. Not throughout, but one particular part made me very angry to the point that I felt guilty enjoying any other parts, but I got over it. Let's just say, when I came out of the film, I went to listen to Mr. Bad Guy rather than A Night At The Opera... Yeah I noticed half way into the film I was starting to get annoyed at Freddie a bit, but I get you have to have character development in a film and can't always have him being the likeable, sassy queen in the band. Plus in a way I'm glad they didn't just martyr him? Obviously this has Brian and Roger's influence all over it, and while Brian always felt very neutral and level-headed, I did actually feel Roger wasn't always portrayed the nicest (he was always the one in arguments I noticed). I found the Mr. Bad Guy thing funny actually. I've always enjoyed a handful of songs on that album, but when you've spent the last 90 minutes listening to the instrumental mastery of Roger Taylor, Brian May and John Deacon, the backing band he had for that album sounds very underwhelming in contrast!
On the whole it's definitely not a perfect film, but it's an enjoyable one and if you even casually like Queen you should definitely check it out.

Saw the film the other day. Verdict? LOVED it. The guy who played Freddy was really good, the vocal sound-alike spot on. Acting cast were strong, even that guy from Eastenders, dare I say.
All in all, I'm gushing. I definitely want to see it again and I'll be buying the DVD.

I was talking with some people about the movie at a party last night and someone said in regards to the accuracy of dates etc that instead of taking the film as a biopic, one should instead see it as a character study of Freddie Mercury. A fantastic point!

A fantastic point! I got over the dates to be honest. Ive serious issues with the portrayal of Freddie in the mid 80s to give the film a dramatic kick. The second half of the film is essentially fiction. It would have been fine had one of the others died, and Freddie was around to give the go ahead to distort and embellish his character at his own expense- but the fact that Brian and Roger allowed these hurt to be honest. I will try see it a second time and not be so sensitive but this being Freddie Mercury, I'll find it too hard.

Freddie's portrayal didn't bother me that great a deal (though I did notice I was starting to dislike Freddie a bit in the middle haha).
How much do you know about Freddie in his personal life at the time? Genuine question, as I only know so much about Queen (definitely not as knowledgeable in them as I am with MJ or The Beatles). I imagined that he definitely wasn't as bad as he was in the film and that parts were exaggerated as with any dramatization, but I don't find myself that affected by it, perhaps out of ignorance.
I think I'd be annoyed if people actually were using it as a reason to attack Freddie, but I've seen not a single person do that and the movie redeems him fully too. In fact to be honest I don't think I've ever actually seen anyone attack Freddie Mercury haha.

Ive been a fan of Freddies just a little under how long I've been an MJ fan so I know quite a lot due to years of reading about those who were closest to him, including his husbands book and his personal assistants, who is still very active in the fan community with blogs. Its only the huge fans Ive seen online deeply upset by what was in tbe film. Even by watching the Days of Our Lives, Great Pretender or Freddie Mercury: The Untold Story you'll see how much they embellished (3 amazing docs). His time in Munich is quite accurate, he partied more than he worked. On the album that Brian May originally played on. And the album where Roger was at several listening sessions. But yeah, ignore all that, make Freddie a prick. Outside of everything that infuriated me, as a film it was poorly executed, which i expected. The first half is a mess as you said. Second half is fiction. Maybe i wont be so sensitive 2nd time, but Im just so sensitive to a man that got me through so much (morseso than Michael in many ways). One thing i disagree with is how people say that homosexuality is viewed in a negative light kind of.... well, what did they expect its set in the 70s/80s!!!! Thats how it was viewed!!! Final point - JOHN DEACON IS TIM FROM JURASSIC PARK

Interesting to read how casual fans feel about the movie vs. how hard core fans feel. I'm not interested in this movie. If I want to see Freddie in concert, I will watch Freddie in concert and not someone miming to his songs. If I want to know about his life or person then I will watch a documentary or read a book. So no, thanks from me, and I feel the same about a possible MJ biopic - actually I am even more against it, because MJ is even closer to my heart and I bet they would screw it up. Freddie is much less of a controversial figure and even his portrayal is debeated. And Innuendo says the second part of the movie was pure fiction. Imagine what they would do with MJ whose life and personality is much more difficult to grasp and to give it a fair portrayal! I am glad you mentioned the documentary The Great Pretender. I used to watch it and I liked it. I didn't know that the footage from Freddie's video Living on My Own was footage from his actual birthday party when he turned 40. LOL. You see some more footage from it in the doc. Here is the doc: www.dailymotion.com/video/xzxhr2

As for the docos, yeah Great Pretender was good, and you could hear a glimpse of his duet with MJ before William Orbit and the Estate fucked it all up (who rejects a mix from Brian fucking Mays and Roger Taylor?! Then actually listens to Orbit's mix and goes "yep this is good. Let's use a worser take of Michael and have that overpower Freddie on his own song). Anyways I downloaded Days of Our Lives a lil while back so I need to get around to watching that. Heard good things about that, but it does seem short for the time period it covers. I watched the ending and they skimmed over Made for Heaven, which is a bit disappointing but hey. Maybe they just didn't document that album's process a lot.

Its a nice companion, as it goes into his solo career with an MJ cameo
