Am I missing something? Why is this such huge news? I read the mortality rate is hardly any higher than common flu's and the victims are usually those with a compromised immune system. Which is unfortunate for them, but it is the same with the flu. So what is the big fuss about? Does the media create panic and hysteria for ratings?

It's possible, but given that this virus originated in China and China loves to downplay anything bad going on there (see: Tiananmen Square and the current HK protests), I can kinda see why they would try to push this a bit more. Probably still wise to take precautions, though.

I know I definitely don't want it anyway... Confirmed in Germany now. I think its the fact that theres no cure for it so far is the main thing, but it's not exactly quite Resident Evil either.

I'm pretty certain I had the coronovirus early Jan. I had been working quite closely with a Chinese guy who was temping in my office. He'd only been in the country a matter of weeks and came into work looking like shit one day. I never saw him again after that but about a week later I had a fever of 104 and some of the worst flu-like symptoms of my life. I didn't even leave the house for a week and it took me at least a fortnight to recover fully.

I still don't get why is the panic around this like it is the plague. For example, today I read this:
I start thinking they are not telling us everything about this shit. Otherwise these measures seem a bit excessive.

It's because they are currently 18 months away from a vaccine I think, so prevention/quarantine is the only thing that can be done really. But it's also the media being the media too. We have an absolutely major hospital/health crisis at the minute in Ireland, so it's absolutely imperative it's kept out. The flu is bad enough in our hospitals without it's cousin arriving.

It's hit London...
A first case of coronavirus has been found in London, it is claimed.
A City Hall source told The Sun that a patient in the capital has been diagnosed with the deadly disease - which has killed more than 1,000 and infected thousands more around the world.
The victim is said to be a Chinese national who was diagnosed this afternoon.
A Department for Health and Social Care spokesman said he was unable to comment on individual cases, and would not confirm the diagnosis.
If the report is correct, they will be the ninth person in the UK to be diagnosed with coronavirus.
It comes as all 83 people in quarantine in a British hospital were told they've tested negative for coronavirus.
The Brits, who were flown back from China and taken in coaches to Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral, Merseyside, will now leave the facility immently.
They've stayed in the accommodation for the past fortnight.
Mirror Online told how their flights landed at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, and the Brits were quickly whisked onto coaches for the 200-mile trip north.
Officials are currently trying to trace 12 patients who were treated by two GPs - one of whom is Catriona Greenwood - who have tested positive for coronavirus.
Between them, the two doctors worked in four different places in East and West Sussex - a nursing home, an A&E department and two GP practices.
The pair are now in isolation, and efforts to trace those that came into contact with them are ongoing.
Two prisoners in a UK jail were tested negative for the disease though today.
A British man who unknowingly spread coronavirus to at least 11 people has been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery.
Businessman Steve Walsh, the man at the centre of a UK outbreak of Corid-19, is no longer contagious, NHS strategic incident director Professor Keith Willett said.
Speaking yesterday before he was discharged from Guy's and St Thomas' in London Mr Walsh, 53, said his thoughts are with others who have contracted the virus.
Mr Walsh, from Hove near Brighton, who works for a firm providing gas analysis equipment, caught the virus in Singapore and is thought to have infected 11 others at a French ski resort he visited on his return from the city-state financial state.
Five of the cases linked to Mr Walsh are in England, five are in France and one is in Majorca, Spain.
The bug has killed more than 1,100 people worldwide with the vast majority in China, where it originated.

Which is unfortunate for them, but it is the same with the flu. So what is the big fuss about? Does the media create panic and hysteria for ratings? I'd say part of it is the media does print stories for ratings and money. People forget the first job of the media is to make a profit rather than reporting truth. This would be compounded by the speed of the spread of conspiracy theories about coronavirus itself. This leads to further media stories on it and not always fact checked. The WHO has said that the spread of conspiracy theories is getting in the way of them doing their jobs effectively. It certainly puts them at a disadvantage in getting the correct information to people. This intensifies the cycle. Another factor is the decline in critical thinking skills amongst the general public. A lot of people are more susceptible to manipulation than ever, especially emotionally. In my experience, it tends to be those with left idealism who are most often sucked in. Then it's those with extreme views such as far right/left and those who are paranoid/distrustful like conspiracy theorists. Shot a conspiracy theorist down in flames last night quite easily over this issue. End result? Blocked me. So, another factor is social media which encourages people to construct their own echo chambers. Always a bad idea.
