I'm not too familiar with Madonna's work, but I know she had some *very* explicit songs/videos as well. Didn't videos like Justify my love and Erotica come out before Janet.? Was there an uproar or did people embrace it? I think people praised Janet for her Janet. album.

Erotica was the year before janet, it got a lot of flak, although most of that was Madonna's fault as she released it alongside her Sex book which was ridiculous as it took all the focus of the album (which was fantastic), but of course the press aren't going to talk about how great songs like Rain, Deeper & Deeper and Bad Girl when she's released pictures of her virtually fingering herself.
But the music & lyrics itself was tame compared to if or Anytime, Anyplace, and janet was tame compared to Janet's later efforts (Warmth & Moist).

Madonna released a sex book?! God I seriously have to catch up on everything. That's sad... I really like Erotica album. The early nineties must have been awesome with Dangerous, Erotica and Janet

Then getting into 1995-6 you had History, Alanis' Jagged Little Pill plus some great rock stuff by Suede, Pulp, Oasis etc.
Glory days.

Mr R, did you ever hear the acoustic version of Jagged Little Pill, and if so is it worth checking out? It was a great album to be fair and I was delighted when I bought it! It was another moment hearing that album! The album isint what it used to be.

Yeah, I must dig out my cd from -was 95? Thereabouts?- and give it a spin. It was an important album for me at the time. And i'll be checking out the acoustic version also. I know it was a big album for you also. Damn I need to revisit it!

Am I the only one who doesn't really enjoy All For You all that much?
People always say that Damita Jo and 20 Y.O are bad but I think All For You has maybe a few great songs (love AFY and Trust A Try) and the rest are throwaway... I don't like how they altered her voice for some songs and the sounds are a bit too 'trendy' for my taste

By the way. Rhythm Nation was released 25 years ago today. Her best album for me. There is not one bad track on it imo and the interludes are pretty great too. The short films were groundbreaking. Love that whole era.

National Geographic voted it her best album! I like Damita Jo too tho!π

I think Trust A Try and Doesn't Really Matter are some of her best songs. But the rest of the album bores me a bit, but that already happened with Velvet Rope (but on VR you have the stronger hits).

Amazing really, my feelings on Janet. I will quite happily listen to Control, RN1814, Janet & a few off Velvet Rope until the cows come home. But never anything at all after that. And I mean nothing. If Runaway, All For You or Just A Little While come on radio/TV I'l listen and think they're okay tunes, but never voluntarily put them on.
It's amazing really considering my passion for her 1986-1996 work.
A bit like Oasis really! I couldn't be a bigger fan of their first two albums and I mean huge fan, but only a handful of songs from their albums after that ever get listened to.
I suppose in reality, most acts have a shelf life and we're lucky to get 2 or 3 great pieces of work from them.
