Amazing really, my feelings on Janet. I will quite happily listen to Control, RN1814, Janet & a few off Velvet Rope until the cows come home. But never anything at all after that. And I mean nothing. If Runaway, All For You or Just A Little While come on radio/TV I'l listen and think they're okay tunes, but never voluntarily put them on. It's amazing really considering my passion for her 1986-1996 work. A bit like Oasis really! I couldn't be a bigger fan of their first two albums and I mean huge fan, but only a handful of songs from their albums after that ever get listened to. I suppose in reality, most acts have a shelf life and we're lucky to get 2 or 3 great pieces of work from them. I'm the same with Oasis although I also really like Be Here Now and The Masterplan b-sides collection. Have you Listened to Janet's Unbreakable album? It's really superb.

Unbreakable is really good but it dropped off the radar so quick! Last year it was in HMV for 2 or 3 pounds. It was in the bargain bin within about 4 month's.

I mean for the most part, most albums don't have staying power anymore because of the internet. People can instantly hear anything, watch a million reviews on youtube and swiftly -see what I did there?? Taylor, swiftly, wink wink, nudge nudge- move on and consume the next piece of audio visual media. It's all so instant now. Albums are dead a few weeks after they drop. They're not an event anymore.

Yeah, and unless you're Ed Sheeran, only one hit single per album now. Shame. Anyway. Janet is JJ's best album (albeit) needed trimming and also has the most aesthetically beautiful cover and CD booklet ever, bar Dangerous.

I know a lot of artists have a creative peak, but plenty of long-standing artists have bounced back from creative lulls in their career to go on to make work every bit as vital as their so-called glory days. Look at Bowie for example, he really lost his way mid-late eighties and even much of his nineties work is patchy, but then his last four albums (Heathen, Reality, The Next Day and Blackstar) were up there with his very best. And even the dodgy albums from the 80s/90s are worth owning, as a great artist never really loses it completely. I think it’s the same with Janet. There was a definite drop-off in quality in the 00s, but there was still excellent tracks scattered throughout and to ignore that, as someone who is passionate about her older albums, you’re denying yourself some great songs. Listen to songs like Enjoy, Daybreak, I Want You, Can’t B Good... these are all excellent songs from patchy albums, but I’m glad we have them and I like some of these tracks just as much as anything she put out in the 90s. And Unbrekable was definitely a return to form. The first great Janet album from beginning to end since TVR.

I think Bowie and a few others are the exceptions though, and even then I think only their fans would agree.
Most people would think Madonna's heyday was 80's with a renaissance for Ray of Light in 1997, but I would argue her best work has been 2000+
Same for Springsteen.
I guess what I'm saying is you have some magnificent artists who continue to make great music until they drop even if it doesn't really trouble the charts anymore, but I think the majority burn brightly for a short period of time and then fade out. But even if I'm right about Janet, ten years and 3-4 really great solid albums is still a massive achievement.
Mariah Carey is similar for me (to a lesser extent), amazing work on her first 3 and a bit albums (Music Box is fantastic) but absolutely awful work since 1996.

Well I’ve had a major reassessment of The Velvet Rope the past year, both the album and tour. Both are fantastic! MattyJam rubbed off on me once again! I bought the concert on VHS when it was released and it just didn’t click with me at all. I watched it last weekend and found it to be wonderful. A perfect antidote to today’s smartphone filled arenas and MJ’s 30th Anniversary shows, given that the official concert release is also live from MSG. Stunning show, performance, setlist.🤩
