They look like they had fun making that, anyway. This promo is very Xscape. I'll admit that Filthy has slightly grown on me as much as it kills me to say that.

^^Or bad taste in some or another. Filthy is seriously horrendous, George Michael did it miles better with his song Freeek.

Again, the resentment towards JT does not simply come from the fact that he makes "black music". It's the accompanying examples of disrespect towards black legends that he was clearly inspired by (Janet, Prince etc.) is why he was criticized. To turn this into a "why can't white people make black music?" issue is ignoring a whole lot of the point that was made about JT. Bruno Mars is Hispanic and Jewish, but no one seems to have a problem with him not doing latin music or klezmer, but more funk, R&B etc. That's because people do not get that sense of disrespect from him that they do feel in JT. But disrespecting them? It seems pretty tame in the world of general RnB or hip hop banter to me. I agree it's a bit shit, but nothing compared to what a lot of singers in those genres do, especially rap. These throwaway lines are normally just thrown in for cheap publicity, it doesn't define him as a man or artist. It's not as if he's not blatant in his partnerships with Timbaland or Jay-Z, most times they seem more like duos rather than a single artist. From what I've heard from him, he gives full kudos to his black producers and songwriting partners. War of words are regular in rap and hip-hop, not so much in pop-R&B that is JT's genre and it is extremely distasteful from him especially regarding the Janet issue. Do you really not see how then him adding insult to that injury is not just your regular fun little hip-hop banter, but extremely distasteful? And that towards an artist who influenced him and with whom he collaborated. They were both involved in a scandal and then he got away with it more unscathed than Janet did and that had a lot to do with the fact JT is white and male while Janet is black and female. Then he brags in a song that: It's hard to hear you from way up here Now I saw you tryin' to act cute on TV "Just let me clear the air..." We missed you on the charts last week Damn, that's right you wasn't there Do you really not see the extreme arrogance in that? Do you really not see how to a lot of people it comes across as him basically bragging about getting away with what Janet didn't - which was a lot of due to his white male privilege? Do you really not see why that would piss off a lot of black people?

I agree it's a crass thing to say, (but it probably had a black producer by the way), but just because Janet is black why does this mean it's about race.
The way I look at the whole Janet debacle is this. If it was Madonna the outcry would be exactly the same. I'm sure of it. And then Justin writes these lyrics (if he did write them) then it's still crass but not about race.
It's like this stupid H&M 'racism' outcry with the black kid modelling a 'cheekiest monkey in the jungle' jumper (or words to that effect). The jumper itself isn't racist, but suddenly putting it on a black kid is? No. What's racist is thinking that 'I better not put it on a black kid, just in case'.
This is like the sexual assault outcry, suddenly screaming that everything is assault or racist means the real predators/racists get lost in the mire. Being silly or insensitive to something isn't the real problem in society. The real problems are people like those in power or have a voice (Trump, Farage etc..) talking about building walls, jingoism, 'shithole' countries etc...
This is what we should be getting upset about and that's what pisses me off when people seem to look for things to get upset about. E.g. Cultural appropriation. And don't for one second tell me that I don't get CA or racism because I'm white (whoever that was). Offensive & untrue. Not that it matters but I'm Jewish so I full get racism thank you very much and even if I wasn't, I think as an educated human who understands the difference between right & wrong, I get how repulsive racism, homophobia, anti-semitism etc. is.

Yup! Spot on! As a -white- Irish man living in the UK I've experienced a certain amount of racism towards me over the years, very little but a certain amount, some I would simply call banter or piss-taking but if I wanted to I could shout racism if I wanted to. My people were oppressed for 100's of years, the IRA issue is something I have to be weary about and if a bomb exploded anywhere it brings it up again for people, as its extremely sensitive. Trump is calling certain place shit holes, and people here are getting upset about Justin Timberlake? Like really?? Gawd almighty it can seriously piss a person off. People are way to precious about certain things. People on here who aren't even Janet fans are suddenly rushing to her defence because they hate Justin Timberlake so much. WTF is THAT all about??? Don't like the guy? Just move on then. We're not in a courtroom here.

Don't like the guy? Just move on then. We're not in a courtroom here. Again, guys, you are trying to frame the conversation in a certain way that was never the point and trying to put words in my mouth. No one here called JT a racist. But at the very least he was being extremely arrogant and insensitive about his white male privilege (let's not forget the "male" part either). If he is really not aware why he was given a different treatment than Janet by the media and the industry - or at the very least doesn't give it a thought that at least partially that might have been a reason - then he is very dumb. If he is aware and despite of that he chose to rap those lyrics then he is extremely insensitive and arrogant. I don't know which is worse. And you don't have to be a Janet fan to see how fucked up those lyrics are coming from JT. And what does Trump have to do with this conversation? Just because there are blatantly racist people in this world like Trump we somehow should not discuss JT in a thread that is about him. "WTF is THAT all about???" If you want to discuss Trump's racism open a thread about that. This thread is about an article that was bound to draw a conversation about JT and his relationship to black music and whiteness. It's not a JT fan thread. Hell, it is not a JT fan board. If you guys want to read nothing but praise about JT then maybe you should look up a JT fan board. On non-JT boards, guess what, not everyone will be fond of the guy. And I hope it is not a requirement to be.

^ Bit harsh!
I'm not even a JT fan (bar a few early songs) like I said originally said.
And I brought up Trump because that's how conversations go, they evolve. Rather than everyone saying the same points, different factors and issues in a similar genre are brought up as comparables.
I'm not saying you or others should change your view; it's just debate isn't it? Otherwise every thread from Invincible to JT to Weinstein would be us all saying the same thing!

Actually I was addressing most of that to aazzaabb who was the one who seemed to have lost patience with the fact that we have different opinions about JT and that we are not all saying the same thing about him. I mean: Why should we not comment on the guy if we don't like him? That sounds like he only wants people to comment on him if they like him and have only rosy things to say about him. That's how it came accross, anyway. My issue with your post is simply, that you twisted me saying JT has white male privilege into me saying JT was a racist. I never said that. So your point about whether there are bigger racists in the world than JT, or about H&M or the #metoo campaign pretty much moot. I never called him a racist and I never called him a sexist either. Just like I don't think Elvis was a racist. That doesn't change the fact he enjoyed the benefits of white privilege. The same can be said about JT. That's not their fault in itself. But when one of them then flaunts that white male privilege the way JT did in these lyrics (whether out of ignorance or arrogance), I am sorry, but people are entitled to feel antipathy about that.
