What a hot mess. A performance throwing everything but the kitchen sink in there, desperately hoping that something will stick.
Kinda sad state of affairs that this is what passes for pop royalty in 2018.

That was actually pretty allgood! I loved how he started in a separate area and then made his way in, it's a nice change to starting off in the arena (although Lady Gaga did 'jump down' last year, an awesome entry in itself). I thought some of the choreography was pretty neat too. Solid selection of bangers from his whole career and that Prince tribute was sweet. How it finished with the Prince symbol lighting up the city! Nice way to finish up the Prince tribute. I also loved how he ran into the crowd at the end too, I don't think I've seen legitimate audience participation before? Outside of the people on the field that is. I mean you can tell that kid was just shook All the excellent lighting and stage setups makes me really wonder how it would've been if Michael performed at night on the Superbowl with more advanced technology, it would've been spectacular! There was so many cool lasers at the beginning and that cool dynamic lightning off the Mirrors during the Mirrors sequence! Dunno I was actually pretty happy with that. Prince's projection outperformed JT. Looool no it didn't

I guess that projected image of Prince is what TMZ mistakenly interpreted as a "hologram". Overall the show was pretty underwhelming IMO. As a performer he is like a good tradesman to me - can do everything on an OK level, he can even be entertaining, but there is just nothing more in it. Nothing inspiring or nothing that takes it to another level emotionally. He is a tradesman, not an artist to me. I also think about these Medleys that less would be more. I mean less songs jammed into the Medley. This way it just sounds like a mess where every 30 seconds it switches into another song before you could even get into the previous one. ETA: I see the reviews trash him too. I just saw this: www.thedailybeast.com/justin-timberlakes-super-bowl-halftime-show-was-a-total-disaster

I had the misfortune of catching his performance while working a night shift and I tried to give him a chance to impress me, despite never having been impressed with a single aspect of his musical output since his career began.
All I came away thinking was how he really lacks any true identity of his own as a performer. He does some distinctly boyband-esque group choreography as if to try and prove he can still bust a move, but it's nothing particularly special. Then he sits at the piano posturing his best serious singer-songwriter act and I think okay, maybe he'll surprise me with some killer piano chops, but as with his attempts at guitar playing, he is barely audible over the backing of the seasoned musicians he employs from old lineups of the New Power Generation.
And then comes the Prince tribute. Quite why he decided to sing I Would Die 4 U as his sole tribute to the man is a mystery but given the song title, his choice of song feels a little lacking in thought and sensitivity. Wouldn't Nothing Compares 2 U or Purple Rain or Doves Cry been more appropriate? Hell, even if he'd of pulled out Sign O The Times I could've given him credit for picking a ballsy and socially awaken tribute song. But of all songs, I Would Die 4 U borders on distasteful.
All in all, it left me feeling the same way I've always felt about Justin: baffled. Baffled at his popularity, baffled at his complete lack of creativity and baffled that he still seems just as clueless and lacking in self-awareness as ever, with his poorly thought out Prince tribute and performing Rock Your Body as if Nipplegate had never happened.
I don't usually like casually throwing in the race card into conversations, but even as a straight, white man myself, it is painfully obvious that this guy is the walking dictionary definition of white privilege.

Bravo sir, I couldn't add anything to this as you've hit the nail on the head perfectly here for me.

I really thought better of you two. Especially playing the race card.
I don't like hugely successful white artists like Adele or Taylor Swift or Gaga but it's just taste.
How can it be white male privilege when a black man did this 25 years ago???

He's a star because he's had a pretty good run of boyband hits & adult solo material. Plus some very wise collaboration choices. Good videos etc.

How can it be white male privilege when a black man did this 25 years ago??? Difference is, Adele, Swift and Gaga never piggybacked on the talent of black producers and musicians only to turn around and throw one of their biggest icons under the bus. Not only did Justin refuse to stand up for Janet when she faced unprecedented backlash which her career never truly recovered from, he has also subsequently refused to acknowledge his cowardice and pandering ways and has further added insult to injury by being disrespectful to another huge black icon, only to jump on the bandwagon and lavish tributes and praise on the man once he is dead. He is a hypocrite and he is definitely an example of white privilege at its most blatant and ugly. He has gotten away with it for so long and now people are calling him out on it and I think that's a good thing.
