Well I’ve finally cracked the Velvet Rope album! For over 2 decades It did absolutely nothing for me. It bored me to tears. It didn’t click, I didn’t get its greatness at all. But last week amidst a massive Janet revival phase I’m currently sucked into I hit the play button and it sounded alright. Better than I had remembered. I googled the album, read through the Wikipedia and articles on it to get the lowdown and with the full context of it all and a few more listens it really began to open up to me. Ten days later and I’m hooked on it and have been listening to it nonstop ever since. It’s incredible how much more you can take from something when you’ve got context lol. My big mistake with this album was from day one I treated to it as a very basic, even frivolous pop album. Wanting my ears to be rewarded instantly with catchy dance pop. My attitude was a bit “if it doesn't grab me instantly then forget about it”. And every time thereafter I had that gripe in the back of my mind. I knew Janet was saying it was this deeply meaningful exploration of sexuality and all these personal issues but I seemed to ignore that and just listened to it at face value and decided it was boring. Well it’s not boring! It’s immense! I immediately removed the interludes. I’m just not a fan of them and find them pointless. They do nothing for me. But I’m really liking most of the tracks now to a large degree and as an album I’m really enjoying it a lot. Control/Rhythm Nation/Janet/TVR! Superb run! There's so many great tracks on TVR, I don't know how you missed them all these years? Songs like Got Til It's Gone, I Get Lonely, You, the title track, What About, Together Again. I also love the hidden track after Special (the name escapes me). The interludes don't bother me too much, although I could do without the one where she's talking to her friend on speakerphone so she can stroke her black pussy, but maybe that's cuz I have a strong aversion to lady gardens!

The interludes don't bother me too much, although I could do without the one where she's talking to her friend on speakerphone so she can stroke her black pussy, but maybe that's cuz I have a strong aversion to lady gardens! I know right?! Apart from Got Til It’s Gone, Together Again, I Get Lonely and maybe the rock track What About, as an album it just didn’t really do anything for me. Musically I was in a much different place I think. Eventually I even got tired of Got Til It’s Gone thinking it was sort of jumping on The Fugees sound who were massive at the time and I found the relentless house beat on Together Again overly incessant and a tad annoying as I found it slightly too high in the mix and it began to grate on me due to being on the radio nonstop. Yes, the hidden track is great and Special is also fantastic apart from its abrupt ending. I’ve also been listening to John Cameron’s podcast episodes on Janet and love the whole process of Jam & Lewis finding the perfect sample, looping it and building the track on it. Really put me back in a deep Janet mood.

That’s so good you have velvet rope a chance! I think that album has aged the best Probably. Honestly though, I think Control and RN sound fantastic. The production is top notch. On headphones they sound amazing. 😎

Are you dancing? Put your headphones on right now and start bopping! I’m bopping to the 12” Extended Mix of Like A Prayer! 🙌 I’m having a spiritual moment!
