The Mexican media were reporting the Eagles GH surpassed Thriller as "the biggest selling album of all time," they didn't specify it was in the USA. That's deliberately lying and being misleading. BUILD THE WALL! BUILD THE WALL!

Yeah, I actually think it's one of, if not THE, most well known record Michael Jackson holds. Dude held a number of records so it's inevitable that a number will be broken, but I like to think this'll be THE one he'll always keep.
I'm not really worried though. I think I read earlier this new certification puts The Eagles' GH album sales up to 51,000,000 worldwide. An extremely strong number no doubt, but Thriller still holds ahead by another 15,000,000 copies. Keep in mind the charting positions Respect and others have pointed out, along with it's supreme streaming numbers for a catalog album, well the King remains in his rightful position. At the top If they keep adding mysterious numbers to the Eagles tally in the USA at this rate, it might even threaten Thriller's global position sooner or later, because the USA is the biggest market and because other countries tend not to really update certifications. They added a mysterious 8 million to the Eagles numbers in 1995 and now a mysterious 9 million that is very difficult to explain if you know chart data, Soundscan data, streaming data. So what makes us think they won't add another mysterious 15 million in the future? The optimist in me likes to think The Estate/Sony will keep Thriller updated at a similar rate, especially with it's crazy streaming numbers. Kinda like what they did in early 2016.

I don't know if it's hate based or race based or what, but the numbers really do not add up. For an album to overtake another it should actually sell and/or stream more. Streaming numbers are there to see for everyone, the Eagles aren't even in the same ball park as Thriller. And Billboard history says Thriller also sold more in the past 12 years since the Eagles album's last certification. The only year when GH finished ahead of Thriller on the catalog chart was 2016, when Glenn Frey died and even then not by much. So it's really difficult to find a convincing explanation for this. That's fair enough, but whatever it is, I don't think its anything to do with any conspiracy theory or anti-MJ propaganda. If the media are reporting it then it's because that's the facts they've been given. Same if someone told them that Carey was now the biggest selling female rather than Madonna. Plus stats are so dodgy, we've discussed ourselves how the much mooted Thriller has sold over 100 million copies is spurious to say the least.Yes. Glass houses. 100 million with no data presented really. It's still the biggest selling album of all time anyway, by a longshot.

Personally, I never cite that number either, but the more realistic 65-70 million.

From UKmix: "So, lemme see if I get it right: the reason why there's a 38x platinum (or 38x diamond) certification for "Greatest Hits" is because they added total streams and single sales from the compilation rather than from the original albums themselves? But that still doesn't explain why they added nine million. I would think with total single sales, it was like, what, 1 or 2 million in total? So that's 32 million. So that leaves six million. I wonder if Asylum shipped Eagles albums to stores and then they or the label gave the RIAA $350 to audit the album. There's not a lot people can get away with in 2018 that they could in 1994 so I like to see an explanation for it. I also wonder if there's a possibility Thriller was UNDER-certified? Lol Thriller definitely has outsold and outstreamed "Greatest Hits" so yeah... confusing." How could that happen exactly? Genuine question.
Wouldn't it be funny if tomorrow The Estate/Sony/RIAA released another statement being like WELL ACTUALLY Thriller's steamed and sold this much, enough to regain it's rightful position at top. Literally just days after The Eagles tried to swoop back in! That'd be hilarious Based on data I don't think Thriller is undercertified. I think it is Eagles that is overcertified and massively so. By at least 10-15 million. I don't know if their label is obsessed with having this record or why it is so, but there is just no data to support these claims and to me it seems like RIAA will just certify anything a label reports to them. BTW, it would be fun to run a test with asking people in the streets in the USA to name two-three songs from this album about which now the media claims is the most popular and most famous. I guarantee you there would be lots of blank stares with some maybe naming Hotel California (which would be wrong because that song is not on this album). But people don't have to be introduced to Billie Jean, Beat It or Thriller.

For innuendo and Tony making a fuss about the 100+ millions. 65 millions is is just in pure album sales in its physical format, it achieved the 116 millions in CSPC. And this info was up to September last year, I bet it already increased due to the streams and digital purchase. In the following table, all categories display figures that way, e.g. in equivalent album sales. For example, singles from Thriller released in digital format sold the equivalent of 4,206,000 albums – 28,040,000 downloads with a 10 to 1,5 weighting. Studio Album: sales of the original album Other Releases: sales of compilations generated thanks to the album Physical Singles: sales of physical singles from the album (ratio 3/10) Download Singles: sales of digital singles from the album (ratio 1,5/10) Streaming: equivalent album sales of all the album tracks (ratio 1/1500 for Audio stream and 1/11750 for Video stream) Equivalent album sales of 116,732,000 copies. That isn’t a typo. Thriller is an insane selling machine that was activated on November 30, 1982 and never slowed down since. We already knew it was the top selling album in pure sales format of all-time. At 40,5 million, it also generated the most compilations sales of all-time, leading both fundamental categories in spite of them cannibalizing each other. Among non-Soundtrack albums, Thriller is also the #1 ever in terms of physical singles sold, again challenging laws of gravity as this format also comes as an opposition to pure album sales. As for downloads of tracks, among pre-digital era albums, Thriller ranks… #1 of all-time. chartmasters.org/2017/09/cspc-michael-jackson-popularity-analysis/48/
