"Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right" - Ricky Gervais. I find myself having to say that way too often....

I've finally found the time to listen to Man of The Woods, so here goes;
First off all let me start by saying I fucking loved the album and refuse to jump on the bandwagon off pettiness and the general all-around pissyness towards him from internet trolls and the media, and for that reason alone -this culture of constant naming and shaming that I'm sick to death of- I'm actually in support of him. Hey, if he's offended you in one way or another, deal with it and get on with your life. Bake a fucking cake, visit your parents or feed your kids.
Anyway,
I'm still uncertain on Filthy, it sort of half grew on me but hasn't gone any further then that. I'll tie that in with the fact that I thought the opening to last nights Super Bowl halftime show was a bit clumsy. It's got a groove but it just lacks in something, although I do love the line "haters gonna say it's fake". How true is that?!
Midnight Summer Jam sounds like something from The 20/20 Experience; the Prince and MJ influences are all over it; very Off The Wall in much the same way a lot of the 20/20 Experience was and that's probably alot to do with Pharell's production as it's a theme in the sound that pulls the album together; in other words; consistency. Let me add here that I had a bit of a half-listen of the album a few days ago -my wife had it on- and it didn't grab me, actually I was a little disappointed with what I heard. It was only -tonight- when I sat down and actually LISTENED to it that it really grabbed me and swept me up in it's sound.
Tracks 3 and 4 on first listen haven't really done anything for me; I find the track and video for Man of The Woods just corny and a generic attempt at southern country soul. It's just too deliberate in what it trys to do, and at this point I wasn't very hopeful that I was going to enjoy a whole lot here.
But....
From track 5 onwards this album really comes into its own. Higher Higher which is one of his all time best album tracks is a mix of r&b and soul and as good as anything he's done in the past that would be considered mature. There's an element to Higher Higher that recalls Marvin Gaye that I can't quite put my finger on, and yes it's probably more due to the black music influence; his team more so than anything else incorporate. But it works so well. It's a great track, probably the first great one on here.
Wave starts off sounding a bit throwaway but in the same way a lot of Chic album tracks do, and within the context of this record it's almost a bit of a stop gap or light relief moment between bigger tracks such as Supplies.
Supplies has grown on me a lot within the context of the album. It works so well amongst the other tracks and has an almost Dr Dre feel and influence to it.
Say Something imho is brilliant. It's the perfect combination and balance of what he was probably going for in terms of fusing southern country with r&b and pop. Its the better of the two 'features' credits and it builds to a stadium anthem type finale. Chris Stapleton almost steels the show here and is voice lends to the track exactly what it needs.
Morning Light with Alicia Keys is a slow summer r&b jam tinged with a reggae feel. It should have been something slightly better but as with a lot of A-list features, it's a bit anti climatic and a bit of a wasted opportunity. Montana is another throwback to The 20/20 Experience and is remicent of Pharell's album Girls. This is potentially one of the big commercial hitters.
Breeze Off The Pond recalls Justified's Rock Your Body but with that Neil Rodgers guitar strumming that Pharell so often employes.
The vocal layering is pristine throughout and coupled with a bass riff and a set of vocal layers is used as the foundation to build the track Living Off The Land around. Its a stunning piece of production that uses a very simple finger picking guitar riff/style and a synth bassnote that runs through the entire thing.
The Hard Stuff is another simplistic modern country styled track with a drum beat -probaly an 808 which is the retro element that's also been a sort of secret weapon for Kanye West- that pulls the theme and sound back to Say Something and gives an overall feel of consistency.
Young Man again lifts directly from the 20/20 Experience album more specifically one of it's best tracks; the single Not A Bad Thing. It's a tribute to his son Silas who's name means 'man of the woods.
Anyhow, haters gonna say it's fake. These are my first impressions. I remember when Justified came out in the early 2000's and Q Magazine giving it a really piss poor review and low grading it only to later include it in their albums of the year list lol.Media, Critic's and the Mob try to dictate what's hot and what's not, but really, if people were able to put their biases and prejudices aside, atleast opinions would be based off of their actual feelings for the music. I've been down that road before with MJ.

I never judged anything based on what the media says. Why is it so difficult for you to accept that some people are just not as impressed with this guy as you are? That some people just really think his new album is piss poor and that his SB performance was underwhelming? It is what it is. It's not a JT forum, so not everyone here is going to be impressed with the guy.

Like him, be a fan of his as much as you want but it's quite valid to say some of us are not impressed because he doesn't have creativity and originality of his own. Much of what JT has done if not everything was already done before and A LOT better.

Hey, if he's offended you in one way or another, deal with it and get on with your life. Bake a fucking cake, visit your parents or feed your kids. I'll have you know, my kid is well fed and I saw my parents just yesterday. Does the JT hate get a bit petty on MJ boards? Truth be told, yeah it probably does. But he really hasn't helped himself over the years with his various douchebag antics. If he can get away with taking the piss out of Prince and Janet, then he makes himself fair game in my eyes. But none of those things would stop me enjoying the music or talent if it was any good or indeed he had any. I haven't heard his new album, largely because I've never heard a single thing from him to warrant further investigation into his work. I also try my hardest not to base my musical discoveries on fierce PR campaigns by artists who are constantly rammed down our throats. I don't even have to listen to his album to know that it is criminally inferior in every way to an artist like Van Hunt, who you've probably never even heard of. He's black, in his mid forties and doesn't get Timbaland or The Neptunes to produce his music, so it's hardly a shocker that he isn't given a world stage opportunity to shine on the Superbowl Halftime. But I'm telling you now, he has more talent and creativity in his pinky finger than try-hard pretenders like JT. As to why I spend even a second of my valuable time ragging on Timberlake, I guess it's because I find his antics loathsome and his entire act to be diluted and wholey derivitive. I genuinely don't believe he has any talent whatsoever and therefore I see it as an injustice (and I'm sorry Tony, but yes, an example of white privilege) that he's in the position he is, when there are other far more talented folks out there who would kill for 5% of JTs exposure, but they weren't born pretty whiteboys who dated Britney.

Justified defines my least favourite period in music, ever (with the David Guetta invasion coming a very close second) Justified sounded like everything else that came out around that time, Invincible included. I never understood the fascination with an album that sounded exactly like everything else. I may be wrong here and over generalising, but I rememebr watching Q, Mtv, all the channels every day around that era and I thought 90% of music was awful. Timberlake is a name I associate with a subpar output who seemed to have gone atmospheric. I was actually dumbfounded he was doing the Superbowl, I had no idea he was still big. I was even suprised he was on Love Never Felt So Good.

I think his album is good, better than the backlash trend the media -the same media who spent the past 15 or so years building him up- are now deciding is not cool or envogue- You know, the people who cut Janets career short but are now fawning over her like she's a martyr. And I'm a Janet fan. I think talent-wise he's mediocre and I thought his Super Bowl halftime show was a bit meh. What I have difficulty with is actively engaging in hating on someone. I guess it's just something I've never done personally and once I've stated my point I move on. It's not like theirs any winners on the internet. It just strikes me as incredibly wasteful of time where a person could be doing something constructive, or even pro active in other more important area's of life. Hey I don't always have the amount of time that some of you seem to have and it just seems like a waste of time to me. And I've never viewed a fan board of a particular artist as a resaon or excuse to trash on other artist's. That just seems incredibly juvenile to me. Don't get me wrong, I can be as petty and sulky as anyone else but generally I try to move on. I try to see the positive aspects in what I engage in. Let me say this; I do not agree with how he treated Janet, but..., if he apologised once then thats acceptable to me. If he apologised to her in private and if she's ok with him then I'm not going to hold it against him forever. I don't agree with and certainly don't view him in the same league as Prince and MJ, no matter how often he tries to position himself as such, but theirs nobody in this day and age in popular commercial music who is, although in terms of talent I think Lady Gaga is quite good. @mattyjam , yes I've "heard of Van Hunt" Imagine that! Condescension much?? I listen to a guy called Sixto Rodriguez, but you've probably never even heard of him. Just in case anyone is under some sort of impression that I'm not in 'the know' in terms of versatile and eclectic music, I'm very aware of other musicians and music, I'm just not a snob about it.βΊ And my main gripe is that now that it's cool to shit on Timberlake and for the thought police to delve into his past and every single mistake or misstep he ever took, I'm against that. Why didn't all the bandwagoners who celebrated Janet Jackson Day on Sunday all go out and buy her albums? Rather than posturing on the internet?! Nah everybody wants to be a victim today of every little thing some one says.

Ugh, we are reacting to something that is happening in pop culture NOW. So it's not like we are going on about how crap his album is or how meh his performance was for years. These are events from a few days ago, recent developments that are talked about on many music forums. Meanwhile sometimes old issues come up, but that's natural in any conversation.

Look, I'm not wearing a JT shirt to bed and sipping my tea from a JT mug whilst warming my feet in JT slippers. I just fail to understand why a person -inteligent people- would take so much time to focus on whats not for them. It strikes me as a bit self indulgent.

It's broadcasting your opinion on a matter you aren't that interested in, but you by sure as hell want tour opinion heard and hashtagged. Also, there aren't really any other active threads... The vinyl one fell on it's arse and I'm sick of the 60 MJ vs Prince threads....

Nah everybody wants to be a victim today of every little thing some one says. Granted, that was a bit condescending, but hey, I was provoked! I think your argument can be turned around and used both ways. You seem to imply that all this JT-bashing is bandwagon jumpers and people being controlled by thought police, but hasn't he been a complete media darling for the last 15 years of his career? Hell, I remember back in 2001/2002 when Invincible and Justified dropped around the same time and you literally couldn't escape the media fawning and OTT praise for Justin. It was very clear that the industry and media were keen on pushing the narrative of MJ being a washed up hasbeen and JT being the new, younger, more exciting fresh blood on the scene. I've personally held a negative opinion of JT since his career began, based on the fact that I think his music is weak, his singing average and his personality dislikeable. There is a definite collective turning of the tide in the last few years, and a lot of folks seem to be criticising him now, which is in stark contrast to the first decade of his career when he could literally do no wrong. This happens to most artists at some point in their career, Madonna's had more backlashes than I care to remember. MJ and Prince too. I guess JT has been around long enough now for it to be open season. But people are allowed to have their gripes and if they disagree with something he's said or done, then he only has himself to blame for that. Nobody would be ragging on JT or pointing out the hypocrisy if he had just left well alone and avoided doing a Prince tribute. You can't blame music fans for pointing out his two-faced actions with Prince over the years. You can't go from making cheap jokes at his expense and diss-songs criticising his record sales to then calling him the "greatest of all time" and an "inspiration" when he's passed. Who's the bandwagon jumper in that scenario?
