What I have difficulty with is actively engaging in hating on someone. I guess it's just something I've never done personally and once I've stated my point I move on. It's not like theirs any winners on the internet. It just strikes me as incredibly wasteful of time where a person could be doing something constructive, or even pro active in other more important area's of life. Ugh, we are reacting to something that is happening in pop culture now. The SB, his album are recent developments that are talked about on many music forums. Meanwhile sometimes old issues come up, but that's natural in any conversation. Speak for yourself. Matty has stated that he actively loaths him lol. What you're reacting to is this conversation thats been going on for the past few weeks or so on this here forum , and yes, that's all fine. Yes, of course, you're/we are reacting to recent developments but it does beg the question 'are we reacting to recent developments or are we reacting to something completely different?' I would pose that question though to the wider internet public and media around the world.

Well, you yourself even as a fan of his admit that his new album isn't that impressive and his SB performance was meh, yet you suspect ulterior motives when other people - in the media or here - say that? They are just talking from a non-fan perspective, therefore sometimes maybe a bit harsher than you. But if people feel it's not a great album and it wasn't a great performance why can't they say that without being told to get a life?

Matty has stated that he actively loaths him lol. I really do. But it's not like I don't realise there are more important things in life to get upset about. But pop culture by its very nature is superfluous and we're all equally guilty of taking it too seriously. My disdain for JT is just a bit of fun. It's like a sport. An ancient Roman blood sport! I enjoy it, channelling my rage into one person makes me feel better about the fact that MJ and Prince are now dead and 90% of modern music sucks ass.

I'm not that impressed though! I think his album is good, better than the backlash trend the media -the same media who spent the past 15 or so years building him up- are now deciding is not cool or envogue- You know, the people who cut Janets career short but are now fawning over her like she's a martyr. And I'm a Janet fan. I think talent-wise he's mediocre and I thought his Super Bowl halftime show was a bit meh. Hey I don't always have the amount of time that some of you seem to have and it just seems like a waste of time to me. I try to see the positive aspects in what I engage in. Let me say this; I do not agree with how he treated Janet, but..., if he apologised once then thats acceptable to me. If he apologised to her in private and if she's ok with him then I'm not going to hold it against him forever. I don't agree with and certainly don't view him in the same league as Prince and MJ, no matter how often he tries to position himself as such, but theirs nobody in this day and age in popular commercial music who is, although in terms of talent I think Lady Gaga is quite good. @mattyjam , yes I've "heard of Van Hunt" Imagine that! Condescension much?? I listen to a guy called Sixto Rodriguez, but you've probably never even heard of him. Just in case anyone is under some sort of impression that I'm not in 'the know' in terms of versatile and eclectic music, I'm very aware of other musicians and music, I'm just not a snob about it.☺ And my main gripe is that now that it's cool to shit on Timberlake and for the thought police to delve into his past and every single mistake or misstep he ever took, I'm against that. Why didn't all the bandwagoners who celebrated Janet Jackson Day on Sunday all go out and buy her albums? Rather than posturing on the internet?! Nah everybody wants to be a victim today of every little thing some one says. Granted, that was a bit condescending, but hey, I was provoked! I think your argument can be turned around and used both ways. You seem to imply that all this JT-bashing is bandwagon jumpers and people being controlled by thought police, but hasn't he been a complete media darling for the last 15 years of his career? Hell, I remember back in 2001/2002 when Invincible and Justified dropped around the same time and you literally couldn't escape the media fawning and OTT praise for Justin. It was very clear that the industry and media were keen on pushing the narrative of MJ being a washed up hasbeen and JT being the new, younger, more exciting fresh blood on the scene. I've personally held a negative opinion of JT since his career began, based on the fact that I think his music is weak, his singing average and his personality dislikeable. There is a definite collective turning of the tide in the last few years, and a lot of folks seem to be criticising him now, which is in stark contrast to the first decade of his career when he could literally do no wrong. This happens to most artists at some point in their career, Madonna's had more backlashes than I care to remember. MJ and Prince too. I guess JT has been around long enough now for it to be open season. But people are allowed to have their gripes and if they disagree with something he's said or done, then he only has himself to blame for that. Nobody would be ragging on JT or pointing out the hypocrisy if he had just left well alone and avoided doing a Prince tribute. You can't blame music fans for pointing out his two-faced actions with Prince over the years. You can't go from making cheap jokes at his expense and diss-songs criticising his record sales to then calling him the "greatest of all time" and an "inspiration" when he's passed. Who's the bandwagon jumper in that scenario? As to the last question, yeah I agree and he did it to MJ too. He ditched MJ at a point where his support would have really meant a whole lot to MJ. I'm now at a point where I'm defending a principle more so than anything else. Let me pose this; regarding JT's endorsements of MJ and Prince; his self positioning as someone on same levely, who is at fault there? Surely both Estates are the ones to be called out? His Prince tribute was good in my opinion. I find the latest 'I Would Die 4 U was wholly inappropriate' as just another notch on the rope for those who enjoy in active hate and at time where everything is politically incorrect. The world has just gotten way to precious about everything. I know how as a fan of MJ in my life that to state I would die for him as to be the ultimate declaration of love for said artist. But no, lets twist it, Prince is dead and he sang a Prince song with the word die. How dare he!

It's not like it offended me or anything (any more so than his very existence offends me lol), I just felt it was odd and perhaps indicative of the whole thing not being particularly well thought-out. Wouldn't Nothing Compares 2 U have been so much more fitting??

I think the album -as far as JT albums go is quite good apart from a few corny numbers and a few tracks that are just downright confused in what they try to be. People can say whatever they want. I really don't know how many more times I need to stress that? I haven't told anybody to get a life as much as I say I fail to understand the restlessness of it all. It's not a competition with a winner at the end, so why constantly flog the same dead horse after the point(s)? Anyway, I can't spell it out any clearer.

As to the last question, yeah I agree and he did it to MJ too. He ditched MJ at a point where his support would have really meant a whole lot to MJ. How did he ditch MJ exactly? I can’t honestly blame celebrities who weren’t close to Michael for not publically defending someone who’s been accused of child molestation for the second time without knowing the facts. JT wasn’t close to Michael nor spent time with him to know the facts of the trial. In an ideal world they would speak up, but I think their apprehension is totally understandable, they are serious crimes and they don’t know the full story. He still praised him before and after the trial anyway (I’m talking pre-death too). I find the latest 'I Would Die 4 U was wholly inappropriate' as just another notch on the rope for those who enjoy in active hate and at time where everything is politically incorrect. But no, lets twist it, Prince is dead and he sang a Prince song with the word die. How dare he! Yup I gotta agree, I sort of just rolled my eyes at that point. It’s like you’re trying to deliberately look for something to get upset by. Maybe right after his death I could understand, but not this far down the road, especially when the song is one of Prince’s biggest singles. There’d be a reason JT picked it, I’m sure.

It worked for Juliet, I mean if I had been Romeo I'd have probably just walked away. From what he said -he being that disgusting loathsome despicable person called JT- he/they got their hands on the vocal stems for I Would Die 4 U and it worked beautifully when slowed down.

Perhaps you have a fair point though, but from MJ's perspective it must have hurt an awful lot for people to back away in your hour of need. That's why Macaulay Culkin will always have my total respect. Look, JT has a habit of backing away from "situations" that become political and potentially detrimental to his career. He did it with Janet, in his Zane Lowe interview he said he backed away from Pharell because he was involed in a dispute with Jive Record's -JT's label, and then hooked up with him again when things cooled. Those two incidents and the fact that he virtually ignored MJ during the trail suggests he backed away. Yes I'll agree his team would have had him warned against it but sometimes in life you've got to have a persons back. I mean Michael Jackson pretty much endorsed him during the Celebrity/Justified albums. He should have had a backbone and pair of balls and lent his support.

That's why Macaulay Culkin will always have my total respect. Sure, but Mac was much, much closer to MJ and would’ve spent more time with him personally in that time period. In addition, given his age, people would’ve been curious to hear if Michael had committed these crimes against Mac back in the early 90s so he had even more reason to speak up and defend MJs name. Maybe Justin should speak up more often and take a stand when it comes to these political sort of things, but this is one instance I can’t blame against him or anyone else who isn’t close to Michael, as much as it sucks for Michael and I do empathize with him of course. There are those more closer to Michael who should have perhaps spoken up in place.

Bringing it back to talk about the album...
As a fan, I think the album is actually his worst to date. I did enjoy a few of the singles (Filthy and Say Something), although I don't feel that he helped himself with all this PR talk about an album that "will push boundaries for modern popular music" etc. How is it even possible to push the boundaries of pop music in 2018? Where's left to go?
On a first listen there were a couple of songs I instantly loved, and also quite a few tracks I plain disliked. That's the first time this happened to me for a Justin Timberlake album, all his previous releases I enjoyed all the way through. This one has a lot of tracks that I would skip. But some tracks I at first didn't 'get' are now growing on me.
Maybe the album is a grower, but so far that only songs I can imagine still playing a year from now would be 'Montana', 'Filthy', 'Midnight Summer Jam', and 'Say Something'.
I'm largely indifferent to the rest. My least favourite tracks are 'Wave', 'The Hard Stuff', and 'Livin' Off the Land'.

Sauce has really grown on me quite a bit. Higher Higher is brilliant. This album has it's flaws but it's a serious grower.
Favourite tracks for me are; Say Something Higher Higher Montana Breeze Off The Pond Midnight Summer Jam Sauce Wave The Hard Stuff Filthy So so; Living Off The Land -decent album track Supplies -decent album track Morning Light with Alicia Keys
Duds; Man of The Woods Hers interlude Flannel Young Man
The "Hers" spoken interlude by Jessica Biel is cringy as hell and Flannel is so corny but I do like the melody. Living Off The Land; is a bit of a borderline cliched corndog of a track "saint or a sinner, the loser can be a winner" ,but it's got enough musically going for it that gives it a bit of a pass. It's got a double bass riff running through it that pulls it together beautiful with a nice acoustic guitar strum also. And the vocal layering is excellent.
